Apple may bring a Camera Control button to future iPad models, a patent suggests this week. Apple filed the patent to explore pressure-based controls for larger tablets.
The technology could help iPad users manage camera functions through taps, swipes, and pressure levels. The patent emerged on August 18, while Apple has not confirmed any iPad launch using it.
The patent, titled ‘Input System for Portable Electronic Device,’ mainly shows tablet designs across 20 drawings and charts. Apple describes the control with technical terms rather than naming iPad or Camera Control.
Two strain-sensing elements could measure force and position across the button. A separate dome switch could respond to stronger pressure, while haptic feedback could confirm actions.
The patent outlines two force ranges for different interactions. The first threshold sits between 0.8 and 1.2 Newtons for lighter input. The second threshold ranges from 3.0 to 4.0 Newtons for stronger presses. Apple writes, “The first force threshold may be between about 0.8 Newtons and about 1.2 Newtons.”
Swipe gestures could add another layer, allowing camera controls without relying on the iPad display. The approach closely resembles Camera Control, which Apple introduced with the iPhone 16 lineup in 2024. The button could make photography, video recording, document scanning, and other camera tasks easier on tablets.
Apple first filed an earlier version of the proposal in December 2025, suggesting continued interest in the concept. Most patent drawings focus on tablets, while three drawings show an iPhone design. The tablet focus keeps the patent relevant to future iPads.
Still, the patent does not confirm an upcoming product or iPad model. Apple files hundreds of patents each year, and many never reach commercial devices. The company has not announced plans for an iPad featuring Camera Control.
