Apple may increase the standard iPhone 18’s memory when the device arrives in early 2027, with analysts expecting either 9GB or 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB in the standard iPhone 17.
The reported iPhone 18 RAM upgrade would support more Apple Intelligence features running directly on the device. These may include improved Siri functions, stronger voice recognition and systemwide dictation tools. However, Apple has not confirmed anything regarding this.
Analyst Jeff Pu expects the standard iPhone 18 to include 12GB of RAM. That configuration would match the reported memory capacity of the current iPhone 17 Pro models. It would also represent a 50% increase over the standard iPhone 17.
Earlier reports from KB Securities and analyst Dan Nystedt also pointed to a possible 12GB configuration. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects a smaller increase. He said Apple’s “lower-end 1H27 iPhones, powered by the A20 chip, will move to 9GB DRAM.” Kuo’s forecast covers the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.
Apple has not publicly disclosed RAM figures for its current iPhones. Instead, industry analysts often identify memory details through component suppliers and production checks. Therefore, the final specification may change before Apple begins mass production.
A 9GB configuration would still provide more memory than the standard iPhone 17. However, it would leave a gap between the regular and Pro models. Apple often separates its iPhone range through processors, cameras, display features and hardware capacity.
Apple’s expanding on-device AI plans appear to drive the possible memory increase. Advanced AI models require enough RAM to process requests locally while iOS and other applications remain active. Additional memory also helps the phone keep more apps available in the background.
Reports indicate that some planned Apple Intelligence features may require 12GB of unified memory. These tools include more advanced Siri voices, improved speech-to-text functions and wider system dictation support. The standard iPhone 17 reportedly lacks access to some functions due to its 8GB capacity.
A 12GB iPhone 18 could bring those AI tools to customers outside the Pro range. It would also give Apple more room for future iOS updates and larger on-device models. Meanwhile, a 9GB version may face limits on certain intelligence features planned for iOS 27.
Apple has already placed on-device processing at the center of its AI strategy. This approach allows supported tasks to run without sending every request to remote servers. Still, larger requests may use Apple’s cloud systems when local hardware cannot complete them.

Rising memory prices could affect Apple’s final choice. AI data centers now consume large quantities of memory components, placing pressure on global supplies. Smartphone makers consequently face higher costs when adding more RAM to new devices.
KB Securities expects Apple to negotiate with major suppliers and absorb part of the added expense. Even so, a jump from 8GB to 12GB would increase manufacturing costs. Apple must balance those costs against its plans to expand AI access.
The standard iPhone 18 may arrive in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 18e and a possible iPhone Air 2. Reports suggest Apple will launch the iPhone 18 Pro models and a foldable iPhone separately in late 2026.
That schedule would give Apple more time to secure memory supplies and settle the standard model’s configuration. For now, the reported 9GB and 12GB figures remain analyst forecasts. Apple has announced neither the device nor its specifications.
