Apple Wallet is preparing to expand its digital driver’s license feature to three additional US states: Utah, Kentucky, and North Carolina. The development could bring the service closer to 20 participating states and territories, giving more iPhone users access to digital identification.
According to reports, Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina are the three strongest candidates for the next expansion. Utah's potential launch follows the discovery of references to driver’s license support in Apple's backend earlier this year. These findings suggest that technical preparations are underway, although neither Apple nor the state has announced an official release date.
Kentucky has also been preparing for the integration. The state previously announced plans to support Apple Wallet after upgrading its digital identification system. The upgrade was expected to be completed in summer 2026, raising expectations that the feature could arrive soon.
North Carolina has provided a clearer timeline. The state recently introduced plans for its digital driver's license system and confirmed that Apple Wallet support is expected in early 2027. Residents will initially access their digital credentials through the state's NC Wallet app.
Apple introduced support for digital driver's licenses and state identification cards in Wallet in 2021. However, adoption was initially slow, with states gradually joining the program. The latest expansion follows the recent launches in Virginia and Oklahoma. According to the current rollout, 16 US states and Puerto Rico support digital identification through Apple Wallet.
The upcoming additions could increase that number to 19 states, bringing the feature closer to wider availability across the country.

Users in participating states can add their driver's licenses to Apple Wallet on compatible iPhones and Apple Watches. Users can present digital IDs at selected TSA airport checkpoints, businesses, and other supported locations.
However, Apple Wallet identification is not universally accepted and does not completely replace a physical driver's license. Users may still need their original identification when driving, traveling, or accessing services that do not support digital credentials.
Although the expansion signals growing interest in digital identification, the actual rollout will depend on coordination between Apple and individual state authorities. No confirmed launch dates have been announced for Utah or Kentucky.
