Artificial intelligence is reshaping the banking industry, moving financial institutions beyond automation toward proactive and personalized customer experiences. From accelerating software development and streamlining onboarding to strengthening fraud detection and compliance, AI is becoming a core pillar of modern business banking.
For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), the next wave of innovation will go beyond digital banking. AI-powered platforms will be able to predict cash flow challenges, recommend financing options, simplify cross-border banking, and provide real-time financial guidance, helping entrepreneurs make smarter decisions before problems arise.
Aditya Narula, General Manager – India and General Manager of Global Lending & Credit at Bluevine, believes AI should enhance human expertise rather than replace it. He says the company's vision is to build intelligent banking experiences that reduce complexity, improve compliance, and empower businesses to scale with confidence.
In an exclusive interview with Analytics Insight, Narula discusses Bluevine's AI strategy, the growing role of its India engineering hub, cross-border banking for India-origin businesses, and how AI will redefine the future of business banking. Here are the excerpts from the interview:
Bluevine has built a digital-first banking platform for SMBs. How do you see AI transforming your products and customer experience over the next 3–5 years, and what are your top priorities for AI adoption?
At Bluevine, our approach to AI is simple: we're not adopting AI because it's the latest trend. We use it where it genuinely makes banking simpler, faster, and more efficient for SMBs and startup founders who can prioritize work that matters the most in a day. Today, AI is already helping us accelerate software development, automate testing, enhance customer support, and streamline onboarding and compliance processes. Right now, a lot of it is invisible. Around 98% of the new code we ship is already produced through AI-powered development workflows. While these improvements happen behind the scenes, our customers experience the benefits through faster product innovation, quicker account setup, and a more seamless banking experience.
Over the next few years, we believe AI will become much more proactive. Instead of simply helping businesses manage their finances, it will help them stay ahead of potential challenges. Imagine a banking platform that can alert a business that its cash flow may tighten three months from now or proactively recommend the most suitable financing option before the business even begins searching for one. That represents a significant shift from simply showing customers their account balance to providing meaningful financial guidance.
This is how we see the future of business banking: not just giving customers information, but empowering SMBs and growing startups and helping them make better financial decisions. At the same time, trust remains non-negotiable. In banking, AI should enhance human expertise and decision-making, not replace sound judgment.
As More India-Origin Businesses Expand into The Us, How is Bluevine Planning to Use AI to Simplify Cross-Border Banking, Compliance, Onboarding, and Financial Operations for These Customers?
At Bluevine, we’ve seen a growing number of India-origin businesses build global companies from day one and want to spend their time growing their businesses, not navigating banking paperwork or compliance requirements. We also recently expanded our platform to allow US business owners living outside the country, including those in India, to open and manage a US business account entirely online. That's where AI can make a real difference.
Today, we use AI to help process and validate business documents during onboarding, which helps us speed up the process while maintaining the high compliance standards that banking requires. We use LLMs in our Know Your Business (KYB) & Know Your Customer (KYC) process to extract, classify, and validate the documents that come in during onboarding, which has brought our average onboarding time down to under 24 hours.
For many founders, this removes a major barrier, as traditional banking has often required things like a US mailing address, making it difficult for international entrepreneurs to access digital banking services. Looking ahead, we see AI playing an even bigger role in simplifying the cross-border banking experience. It can help founders understand the documents they need, identify potential compliance issues early, organize financial information, and provide more personalized guidance as they build and scale their US businesses. Our goal at Bluevine for founders in India expanding into the US is simple: reduce complexity so they can focus on building products, winning customers, and scaling internationally.
Financial Institutions are Increasingly Using AI for Fraud Detection, Underwriting, and Risk Assessment. Which Areas of Bluevine's Banking Operations do You Believe Will Benefit The Most from AI, And How are You Balancing Automation with Regulatory Requirements and Customer Trust?
At Bluevine, even though we believe that AI has the power to transform financial services, it is also an industry where trust is still paramount. Banking is built on trust, so while AI can improve speed and efficiency, it must also meet the highest standards of security, compliance, and reliability.
Today, we have introduced AI to various parts of our business needs, including document processing, onboarding, compliance, fraud detection, customer support, and parts of our credit review process. In these areas, AI is helping us automate routine tasks, improve accuracy, and deliver a faster, more consistent experience for our customers. For example, on the credit side, agents now help interpret background reports and independently search for adverse media or criminal history as part of underwriting, which has significantly cut our overall review time.
We don’t want AI to replace people or make decisions on its own, but rather to help our teams work more efficiently by simplifying repetitive work and surfacing insights. In contrast, important decisions continue to be made within the right governance and compliance framework. Ultimately, customers don't care whether AI powers something; they care that it's fast, accurate, secure, and reliable. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
Bluevine has Been Investing in its Technology and Talent Ecosystem in India. What Role will Your India Teams Play in Building AI-Powered Products and Capabilities, and do You See India Becoming a Global AI Innovation Hub for the Company?
India has become an important part of Bluevine's product and engineering organization, and we expect its role to become even more important as AI becomes increasingly integrated across our platform. Our Bengaluru office is home to 230 employees, and we continue to build core products and capabilities that serve customers across the US, not just regional initiatives. As we continue to invest in AI, our India teams will play a crucial role in developing new AI-powered features, improving engineering productivity, strengthening our platform, and creating smarter and more personalized customer experiences.
What makes India especially valuable to Bluevine is not just its exceptional engineering talent, but also the experience of building products for global markets. Our teams understand how to create scalable solutions that meet the needs of businesses across different geographies and customer segments. That global mindset is a significant advantage as we continue to innovate and expand our platform.
We see India as a strategic innovation hub for Bluevine. As AI becomes a bigger part of the future of business banking, our India teams will play a leading role in shaping, building, and delivering the AI capabilities that will help small businesses bank more efficiently and grow with confidence.
Many Fintech Firms are Moving Beyond AI-Powered Chatbots toward Intelligent Financial Assistants and Proactive Banking Experiences. What is Bluevine's Vision for AI-Powered Business Banking, and What New Capabilities Can Customers Expect in the Coming Years?
At Bluevine, we believe AI is about much more than answering customer questions through chatbots. The bigger opportunity is helping business owners make better financial decisions before problems arise.
Running a growing SMB or startup means constantly juggling cash flow, payroll, taxes, and growth decisions, usually without the finance team that a larger company would have doing that thinking for them. We believe a banking platform should help you stay ahead of those decisions, not just show you your account balance. We are building an in-app tool right now that looks at a customer's actual financial data and tells them something specific, like flagging that they are headed for a cash flow crunch in ten months and that it's worth exploring financing before they are in it, not after. We are also thinking about this beyond our own app, since a lot of business owners already ask financial questions inside tools like ChatGPT, and we want that same intelligence to be available wherever they actually are.
The goal isn't to replace the relationship customers have with their financial institution. It's to make that relationship smarter, more personalized, and available whenever they need it. We want to give every small business access to the kind of financial insights and guidance that were once available to only much larger companies with dedicated finance teams.
