With the approaching Nintendo Switch 2 release date, questions and queries are making their way to the community. Since the 2-minute announcement trailer only showed the hardware and announced a few upcoming features, confusion still surrounds the console regarding some of the unannounced attributes, and VR gaming support is at the top of that list.
Nintendo Switch will celebrate its eighth anniversary in the world of portable consoles in March 2025, and already Nintendo has announced its successor. The existence of Nintendo Switch 2 was a rumor that had been circulating in the gaming community for a long time. On January 16, Nintendo confirmed that it’s no longer a rumor, but the next-gen console is ready to go live in April 2025.
The showcase trailer of the console not only revealed Switch 2’s appearance and brought to light some of its exciting characteristics. The upcoming Switch console is not only getting bigger than its predecessors, but also has a lot of other interesting features, including backward compatibility, a stronger dock to become a great home console that the Nintendo Switch used to lack, newly designed Joy-Con, etc.
Even the upcoming console will come with two USB-C ports, one at the top and another at the bottom. Joy-Cons are now detachable with a trigger button to separate these from the main controller. There is even a headphone jack.
Now, with all these features already revealed for the upcoming console, there are still things that players are somewhat worried about, and that’s the VR support issue. This is one of the most frequently asked queries by Switch players at this point.
That’s an unanswered question that Nintendo hasn’t yet stated in that announcement teaser. Well, the Nintendo Switch supports VR games, and that’s also in a large number. The list includes The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Among Us, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Super Smash Bros: Ultimate, and many more.
Now that the Switch 2 looks bigger and stronger than the original Switch console, it will probably have all the Switch features, along with a few new ones. Also, Nintendo's next-gen console reportedly will support the 3DS and Nintendo DS, which even the current Switch console stopped supporting. In that case, it’s highly unlikely that, being a next-gen console, it will skip the fan-popular VR feature.
There’s another thing to note: at the end of the announcement teaser, Nintendo declared that almost all the games will be supported on this new console except for a few. So, for the first time, Nintendo is adding backward compatibility to its console. In that case, it is logical that the VR games will also be supported on the new-gen console, and players can enjoy them as usual.
Anyway, these are all speculations at this point without any evidence. Until Nintendo announces the VR thing, no one can confirm whether these consoles will have it.
The speculations about what’s coming are at their peak because Nintendo is about to hold the Switch 2 Direct on April 2. This event will be broadcast on Nintendo Switch's official Twitch and YouTube channels. After that, players can start experiencing the new console and check out how improved an experience it provides with its larger screen and enhanced visual qualities.
Fans are, of course, excited, but one thing again bothers them, and that’s the price of the Switch 2. No official data about the upcoming console’s price range has yet been revealed, but predictions say that it won’t be less than $400. These speculations didn’t appear out of the blue.
When the Nintendo Switch was released in 2017, it was priced at $300. So, after eight years, when the new console is coming with such upgraded features, it will naturally come at a higher price range. Thus, this price range came. Anyway, some sources even report that it won’t be $400 but will be available at a much lower and more affordable range.
