Google’s “Project Iris” goes to the graveyard

Google has reportedly scrapped its "Project Iris," now focusing on software platforms for AR

Google has reportedly terminated its "Project Iris" augmented reality smart glasses. Pulling the plug on developing its hardware on augmented reality, Google has pivoted to developing software platforms for augmented reality instead.

The Verge report published last year in January charts the genesis of information about Project Iris, which was described to resemble Ski goggles. However, later Google employees clarified that the Ski goggles happened to be a part of a separate AR project with Samsung. The authentic Project Iris was a series of products resembling a pair of glasses.

According to a report by Business Insider, Google envisaged developing and launching "Project Iris" as its proprietary product. The tech giant acquired a Canadian smart glass company named North back in 2020 to facilitate the development of this next-gen Google Glass successor.

However, with the chief of augmented and virtual reality departing the company and shifting strategies and layoffs, "Project Iris" couldn't remain unaffected, as per the report.

While "Project Iris" is scrapped, Google's unquenchable quest for breakthroughs continues. Per the Business Insider Report, the tech giant is immersed in developing the micro XR platform for AR glasses.
