A person can have a vision problem for years before anyone catches it. Not because the science is missing. Not because screening is impossible. Often, the care is simply too far away, too expensive, or tied to equipment a community does not have. Krishnam Raju Nimmala has spent more than two decades working at the intersection of enterprise data systems, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation. His most mission-driven project, Eyevo, is a smartphone-based AI vision screening platform designed to close the gap between where screening technology exists and where people actually live.
The idea is straightforward but technically demanding: use devices people already have and put artificial intelligence to work in places where traditional eye-care infrastructure may not reach.

Nimmala is a software engineer with more than 20 years of experience across enterprise technology, data systems, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation. He currently contributes to enterprise-scale data systems at Ford Motor Company as an Informatica MDM Engineer, with cross-sector experience spanning Wells Fargo, CooperVision, and Tech Mahindra. Outside that role, his healthcare AI work has focused on a question that is simple to ask but difficult to answer well: how can advanced technology become genuinely useful outside high-resource settings?
Most vision screening solutions continue to depend on physical charts, external instruments, or cloud-based processing. These dependencies introduce cost, limit scalability, and raise privacy concerns. In school-based, community, and resource-limited environments, such constraints prevent routine screening entirely. Eyevo was built to address that structural gap directly.
The platform uses computer vision, machine learning, and mobile technology to support early detection of vision problems through ordinary smartphones. It is designed for underserved and low-resource communities where specialists, equipment, and clinical access may be limited. The choice of device is deliberate: a smartphone is not a specialist’s office, but it is portable, familiar, and present in places where specialized tools are not.

That question led to Eyevo being featured in the IEEE Region 3 Newsletter, Volume 41, Spring 2026 - a publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest professional technical organization. IEEE Region 3’s editors selected Eyevo for coverage based on its technical architecture and its implications for accessible healthcare. The article described Eyevo as a “software-centric mobile vision screening system that operates entirely on consumer smartphones” and noted its design around “privacy-first vision screening in non-clinical settings.” The IEEE publication further recognized that Eyevo is “particularly suited for school-based screening programs, community health initiatives, and economically under-resourced populations, where traditional vision screening tools are often unavailable.”
Recognition from the IEEE community extended beyond the newsletter. The IEEE Computer Society - the world’s leading membership organization for computing professionals - independently featured Eyevo on its official LinkedIn platform as an “innovative AI activity,” placing the platform in front of the global computing and engineering professional community through an editorially independent institutional post.
The scale of the problem Eyevo addresses is hard to ignore. At least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with near or distance vision impairment, and at least 1 billion of those cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed. For Nimmala, that number points to a failure of reach as much as a failure of medicine. Screening tools exist. Specialists exist. Health systems exist. But access does not always travel with them.
“That matters to me. Sometimes the first step is not solving everything. The first step is making screening more reachable so people are not missed for reasons that have nothing to do with their need.”
Eyevo enables vision screening in approximately 2 to 3 minutes using a single smartphone, reducing dependence on specialized equipment and complex screening infrastructure. The platform has been validated across six U.S. states, completed more than 350 screening sessions through beta testing and real-world demonstrations, and engaged 15 beta users across multiple STEM outreach and technology showcase events.
Those demonstrations have taken place in exactly the community settings Eyevo was designed for. Nimmala demonstrated Eyevo at a Family STEM Night event on February 26, 2026, where school administration praised the caliber of the activity and students were notably engaged throughout his session. Melody Richardson, who coordinated the event, wrote: “When I stopped by your room, the students were so engrossed in what you were doing! The administration was so impressed by the caliber of activities and our fabulous volunteers.”
Further demonstrations followed at Sedalia Park Elementary School STEM Night on April 23, 2026, the Harmony Youth Center in Duluth, Georgia on May 16, 2026, and the STEM on the MOVE Workshop at East Cobb Library on June 27, 2026. On June 2, 2026, Nimmala exhibited Eyevo at the Digital Twin City event at IEEE- Innovation, Workforce, and Research Conferences (IWRC) in Dayton, placing the platform in front of a professional engineering audience at a formally organized IEEE conference and further establishing its standing as a technically credible contribution within the field.
The platform has undergone preliminary clinical comparison testing and beta-stage validation, with more than 350 test results completed and continuing. Early evaluations demonstrated promising alignment with clinical vision measurements while validating the feasibility of AI-powered smartphone screening in real-world settings. Those findings have guided continued improvements in accuracy, reliability, calibration, and user experience.
“I want the technology to be tested against real conditions, not only ideal ones. If the goal is accessibility, then the platform has to keep improving based on how people actually use it.”
Nimmala’s enterprise background shapes how he thinks about deployment. At Ford Motor Company, he has operated within systems where data quality, governance, and reliability are not optional - they are requirements for real-world function. That discipline carries directly into Eyevo. A tool built for healthcare access cannot perform only in a narrow technical environment. It must be secure, private, and practically operable by people who are not AI specialists.
“In healthcare, the technology has to earn confidence before it earns adoption. Accuracy matters, but so do privacy, security, reliability, and the way people experience the tool.”
Eyevo’s architecture reflects those priorities directly. All data handling follows privacy-first principles, with local-only storage by default and no mandatory account or cloud dependency - an architectural decision that reflects the same data governance discipline Nimmala applies in enterprise environments where the cost of failure carries real downstream consequences.
That work has attracted independent recognition from some of the most rigorous evaluation bodies in the technology and innovation space. The 2026 Global Recognition Award, granted to fewer than 5.8 percent of applicants from a pool of 15,000 entrants, evaluated Nimmala using the Rasch psychometric measurement model - a methodology that creates objective, quantitative scoring regardless of field or category. He received perfect scores across all five innovation subcategories: novelty and originality, market impact, technological advancement, addressing global challenges, and disruption of existing paradigms.

Their evaluation placed him in a rare category of professionals whose work addresses multiple dimensions of innovation simultaneously.
Nimmala also received the Bronze Globee Most Innovative AI Person of the Year 2026 Award, an honor determined by evaluations from a panel of independent industry experts. The Globee recognition acknowledged his achievements in AI-driven innovation, creativity, and meaningful contribution within the healthcare technology field.
Beyond recognition, the potential impact of Eyevo extends into education, employment, and quality of life. Early detection can support better educational outcomes, reduce the risk of preventable vision loss, and help people avoid delays that affect work, learning, and daily participation. Vision health is tied to how people move through the world. When screening happens too late, the cost is not only medical.
