According to a recent study on hiring trends in the data science and analytics sector in India, around 97,000 positions related to the technology remained vacant due to a lack of qualified talent. The rising demand for data science professionals presses on the need to have some significant courses and curriculum to skill-up the budding leaders.
However, those seeking out to opt for data science and analytics as a career have a healthy job outlook despite apparent skill-gap. Some of the prominent institutes of India offer comprehensive and advanced data science degrees and certifications that can definitely help learners become the right skillset as per industry-demand and land with their dream job.
In India, data science education is offered through two mediums – Engineering and MBA. Analytics Insight has listed some of the notable Indian Institutes that are offering data science education through two aforementioned mediums.
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala (IITM-K)
The program aims at offering a high standard curriculum in allied disciplines of Computer Science. The duration of the full-time course is 2 years (4 semesters) and the part-time course is 3 years (6 semesters). The course is carefully designed to attain technical aspects that enable students to grow into competent Data Analytics professionals. There are 11 core courses, 4 elective courses, five lab courses, and two mini-projects.

Course: M.Sc. in Big Data Analytics
The program leverages the world-leading expertise in research at RKMVERI with the institute's strategic partnership with TCS to offer the students a foundational MSc in the field of Data Analytics. The program covers fundamental concepts and techniques from the areas of mathematics (statistics, operations research, etc.) and computer science (machine learning, data mining, big data algorithms, database, etc.) besides dealing with a range of enabling engineering technologies (e.g., cloud platforms, Hadoop, Spark, etc.) for large-scale data analysis.
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
The M.Tech. (Computational and Data Science) at CDS is a unique inter-disciplinary program that brings together computational and data science aspects to address the major scientific problems. It educates and trains students to 'model' problems or 'simulate' processes varying across many disciplines in science and engineering. The M.Tech program spans 2 years (4 semesters).
The Central University of Rajasthan (collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services Limited)
Course: M.Sc. in Big Data Analytics
The course is specially designed jointly by CUraj and TCS to prepare the students to have a firm foundation on analytical techniques of Big Data as well as to be ready for the industry. The course structure contains an intelligent blending of Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Humanities courses. In the last semester, eligible students are required to do an internship in any of the TCS offices across the country.
Academy of Maritime Education and Training
It is the first PG program on Data Science and Analytics in India with excellent career prospects. M.Sc. in Data Science and Analytics is an interdisciplinary study program having industry orientation. Any engineering graduates (or) B.Sc in Computer Science/ IT / Computer Application / Software Engineering/ Mathematics / Statistics (or) B.A.in economics with mathematics as ancillary subject (or) B.Com with computer application, is eligible to take admission in this course.
PSG College Coimbatore
Course: M.Sc Data Science Integrated
Master of Science in Data Science is five years (10 Semester) full-time Integrated engineering program offered by Anna University, Chennai. The candidates, seeking to take admission, should have passed Senior Secondary (10+2) or an equivalent Examination from any recognized Board/ University.
IIM Calcutta
The objective of this program is to introduce participants to the different tools and techniques used for handling, managing, analyzing and interpreting data. The program will be hands-on with an introduction to software such as XL-Miner, Tableau, SPSS, R, @Risk, Arena, Apache Spark, etc. The program is suited for working professionals who would like to have a hands-on feel on working with data and making sense of it.
IIT Hyderabad
Course: M.Tech in Data Science
M.Tech in Data Science is an extension to the Executive MTech in Data Science (EMDS) program and is equivalent to a regular MTech program. It is a self-paced program of 48 credits that can be taken over 3-5 years. Similar to the EMDS program, students will do 24 credits of coursework in the first two years. In the third year, they would two Capstone projects of 12 credits each. If a student is not interested in doing the 24 credits of Capstone projects, then he/she can graduate with the Executive MTech in Data Science (EMDS) degree.
IIT Kharagpur (in collaboration with IIM Calcutta and Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata)
The course that is jointly offered by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur, and ISI – aims to help shape the emerging profession of business analytics by delivering a cutting edge interdisciplinary educational experience to graduate applicants with an aspiration of building a career in this field. PGDBA is a two-year full-time residential diploma program aimed at creating business analytics professionals employable by leading Indian and foreign firms.
IIIT Delhi
The IIIT-Delhi offers an M.Tech Program in Computer Science (CS) with a specialization in Data Engineering. The main objective of the program is to develop manpower for data and information management related jobs. This will be achieved by an approach involving rigorous and comprehensive academic course work covering theory, fundamentals and hands-on experience with real-world applications.
IIM Bangalore
The Post Graduate Programme in Business Analytics is a 24-month full-time program designed to give you the tools and techniques to become an expert in this evolving, high-demand field. It is structured to enable students to define business and social challenges, use analytical tools and techniques to identify patterns, gain insights, develop business strategies and make sound management decisions. It provides them with an overview of management disciplines and an in-depth understanding of data science.
ISB Hyderabad
The program is designed on a schedule that minimizes the disruption of work and personal pursuits. The program is a combination of classroom and Technology aided learning platform. Participants will typically be on campus for a 5-day schedule of classroom learning every alternate month for 12 months, which would ideally be planned to include a weekend (on Best effort basis). In the month of no classroom connect, the classes will be conducted over a technology-aided learning platform.
