US to award $389 million in R&D funds for power semiconductors, critical materials

The US Commerce Department said on Thursday it plans to award $389 million in research and development funding to four companies working on power semiconductor devices and critical materials to boost technologies like commercial fusion. As a condition ‌of funding, the US government will receive minority, non-controlling, and non-voting equity stakes, the department said.

In recent months, it has awarded 19 R&D grants to semiconductor firms from a $10 billion fund approved by Congress in 2022. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a statement the awards will "accelerate American semiconductor innovation to enhance our domestic energy and power resources."

AI eats into entry-level tech jobs as India's graduates seek work

Purva Jagtap graduated from her engineering college in India this year with a degree she expected would land her a dream job at a tech hub, perhaps one run by a big Wall Street bank. Her family had paid about $5,640 in tuition, twice the average annual salary in the country, hoping it would launch her corporate career.

Instead, the 22-year-old is spending her days applying for jobs and competing with thousands of other graduates for entry-level roles that India’s so-called Global Capability Centers once minted by the millions. Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing that equation.

Microsoft AI Tool Diagnoses Patients Like Doctors, Study Finds New Hope

Microsoft researchers have developed an artificial intelligence tool that diagnoses patients step by step, much like doctors investigate medical conditions. According to a study published in the journal Science on Thursday, the system was more than twice as accurate as general physicians when solving complex medical cases.

The tool uses an AI system called an ‘orchestrator’ to coordinate diagnostic reasoning, decide which questions to ask, and determine which examinations and tests may be needed.
