Hello everyone! Here is your quick roundup of today’s biggest developments across semiconductors, AI engineering, graduate hiring, financial markets, and artificial intelligence safety.

What’s New Today: Five stories are shaping the global technology and business landscape. GlobalFoundries has been selected to operate two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New York under a US-Japan partnership. AI engineering startup Solvera has raised USD 6.3 million from Seedcamp. The UK internship market is becoming more competitive as graduate hiring slows. Fresh US inflation data has raised concerns across Asian equity markets and cryptocurrency markets. OpenAI is facing legal action from eight US states over alleged ChatGPT-related harm to children and vulnerable users.

Fast-Track Insights:

  • GlobalFoundries US Chip Fabs:** GlobalFoundries has been selected as the technology provider and operator for two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities at its Malta, New York, site. The project falls under a US-Japan partnership offering up to USD 21 billion in funding. An initial investment of around USD 10 billion will support a new 300mm fab, which is expected to begin operations in 2029. Another investment of approximately USD 10 billion could fund a second facility.

  • Solvera Raises USD 6.3 Million:** Oslo-based AI engineering startup Solvera has raised USD 6.3 million from Seedcamp. Co-founder Arif Mirza spent nearly a decade working to bring AI software into the construction industry, beginning at Spacemaker before moving to Autodesk. Spacemaker was acquired by Autodesk for USD 240 million in 2020. Mirza and co-founders Pål Rasmussen and Thorvald Thorsnes later launched Solvera after identifying a gap between advances in technology and traditional engineering practices.

  • UK Internships Face Rising Competition: Summer internships are becoming harder to secure in the UK as graduate hiring remains subdued and employers increasingly use AI in recruitment. According to the Institute of Student Employers, applications for summer internships at large graduate employers rose 27% in 2025-26 compared with the previous year. However, the number of internships offered fell 8%. Employers received an average of 102 applications for each summer internship, highlighting the growing competition among students seeking early career experience.

  • US Inflation Rattles Asian Markets and Crypto:** Fresh US inflation data has raised concerns about the direction of Asian equity markets and cryptocurrency prices. Investors are watching inflation trends for signs of possible interest rate changes by the US Federal Reserve. Higher inflation could increase the likelihood of tighter monetary policy, affecting risk-sensitive assets. AI stocks and digital currencies may also face volatility as investors reassess valuations, borrowing costs, and their exposure to market uncertainty.

  • OpenAI Faces Child Safety Lawsuits:** OpenAI is facing separate lawsuits filed by eight US states on October 14, 2026. The cases allege that ChatGPT poses risks to children and vulnerable users, with claims that the company misled consumers about safety and failed to prevent harmful interactions. The legal action marks a coordinated challenge against an AI developer and raises questions about responsibility when people rely on chatbots for personal advice and emotional support. The allegations remain subject to legal proceedings.

GlobalFoundries to operate two new US fabs under US-Japan pact

NEW DELHI: GlobalFoundries has been selected as the technology provider and operator for two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities (fabs) at its Malta, New York, site. This initiative falls under a US-Japan partnership that provides up to $21 billion in funding, according to a statement on Wednesday.

An initial investment of approximately $10 billion will accelerate construction of a new 300mm semiconductor fab, which is expected to come online in 2029. An additional investment of approximately $10 billion would fund a second fab at the same location.

Together, these two fabs are projected to add significant new US manufacturing capacity.
