Indian equity benchmarks ended Wednesday's session on a weak note. Both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 extended recent losses as investors remained cautious amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and higher crude oil prices.
The sentiment was also affected by worries over US trade policies and profit-taking in major banking and pharma stocks. Despite some positive results from select firms, the overall sentiment on Dalal Street was risk-averse.
Sensex closed at 76,903.37, down 567 points (0.73%), while Nifty50 settled at 24,021.75, losing 166 points (0.69%). Selling pressure was visible across most sectors, with 15 of the 16 sectoral indices ending in the red.
Pharmaceutical shares fell amid new US tariff issues, and bank stocks declined with weak results. Midcap and small cap indices also finished on the losing side.
Note: Percentage gains for some stocks were not officially disclosed in end-of-day summaries, but they featured among the session's strongest performers.

Wednesday’s fall clearly highlights the sensitivity of Indian stocks to global events. Rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices above $92 per barrel, raising concerns about the country’s imports, inflation, and company profits.
Additionally, new tariff proposals on imported drugs adversely affected pharmaceutical companies’ performance. The day’s trading session also showed the significance of companies’ earnings reports. The automobile industry showed decent quarterly results despite a weak market.
Moving forward, investors are likely to keep a close eye on geopolitical events, crude oil prices, foreign institutional investor activities, and the earnings season. Volatility in the market may continue until some clarity emerges.
