For teams building API-first products, inference services, or anything that touches machine learning, FastAPI has become the default starting point rather than an alternative worth considering.

Despite FastAPI's momentum, Django hasn't lost relevance: it's simply found its lane. Django's batteries-included philosophy, built-in admin panel, ORM, and mature security defaults still make it the stronger choice for full-stack applications, content-heavy platforms, and anything needing an admin interface out of the box. Its deep integration with Python's AI and ML ecosystem- TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn also means teams building AI-adjacent products can keep backend and ML work in the same language without serialization overhead.
Laravel occupies a similar role in the PHP ecosystem, prized for its Eloquent ORM and MVC structure that lets small teams ship production applications quickly without excessive boilerplate.
The JavaScript and TypeScript stack keeps holding on to a large part of backend programming, yet the actual choice in 2026 is no longer about whether to use Node.js or not; it is the amount of architectural rigor a project might require. Express.js is still the most popular Node.js framework, which is loved for building minimalistic backends and those who enjoy putting together middleware solutions manually.
