Sinister has been ranked the scariest movie in the latest Science of Scare study. The 2012 horror film scored 96 out of 100 after producing a strong physical fear response among viewers.
How Was Fear Measured?
Participants watched horror movies while wearing heart-rate monitors. Researchers tracked heart rate and heart-rate variability to measure both sudden scares and slow-building fear.
Sinister Made Hearts Race
Viewers’ average heart rate during Sinister rose from 64 to 86 beats per minute, a 34% increase. The scariest moment pushed heart rates as high as 131 BPM.
Host Takes the Second Spot
Host ranks second with a Scare Score of 95. The 2020 horror movie actually recorded the highest audience heart rate among the films in the list, making its jump scares especially effective.
Skinamarink Delivers Slow-Burn Fear
Skinamarink ranks third with a score of 91. Its biggest strength is psychological tension, recording the largest drop in heart-rate variability and creating a strong sense of dread.

The 2025 ranking includes Sinister, Host, Skinamarink, Insidious, The Conjuring, Hereditary, Smile 2, Smile, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Talk to Me.

The 2025 edition remains the latest available Science of Scare ranking. Until a new edition is released, Sinister continues to hold the top spot as the project’s latest scientifically measured scariest movie.
