Top Indian Expressways Where Motorcycles are Not Allowed

Check Before you Ride: Several Indian expressways and access-controlled highways restrict motorcycles because they are designed for high-speed traffic. The Union government has said two-wheelers are not allowed on access-controlled expressways as a safety measure. For riders, knowing these restrictions beforehand can prevent diversions, delays and confusion at entry points.

Delhi-Meerut Expressway: The Delhi-Meerut Expressway prohibits two-wheelers under a Gazette notification issued in January 2021. The restriction applies because the corridor is access-controlled and designed for high-speed traffic. Riders approaching the expressway need to use designated alternative routes instead of attempting to enter the main carriageway.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway: The Eastern Peripheral Expressway is another major access-controlled corridor where motorcycles are restricted. The road forms an important link around Delhi-NCR and is designed for faster traffic movement. Riders should therefore check signs and local restrictions before approaching its entry points to avoid being diverted unexpectedly.

Dwarka Expressway: Motorcycles and scooters are prohibited on the Dwarka Expressway, along with three-wheelers and non-motorised vehicles. NHAI introduced the restriction because high-speed vehicles can create safety risks for comparatively slower traffic. Riders travelling through Delhi and Gurugram should plan alternative routes before reaching the expressway.

Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway: The Bengaluru-Mysuru Access Controlled Highway prohibits motorcycles, scooters and other two-wheelers on its main carriageway. The restriction took effect from August 1, 2023. However, riders can use the toll-free service road alongside the highway, with certain sections connected through the old Mysuru Road.

Mumbai-Pune And Ahmedabad-Vadodara: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway does not permit two-wheelers, while the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway also prohibits two-wheelers. Both are access-controlled corridors built for high-speed traffic. Motorcycle riders travelling between these major cities must therefore use permitted alternative highways or service routes instead of entering the expressway.

Plan The Route Before Departure: Motorcycle restrictions can vary between individual roads and sections. Riders should check official notifications, road signs and current traffic information before starting a long journey. Service roads may provide alternatives on some corridors, as seen on Bengaluru-Mysuru. Planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary diversions, delays and route changes.
