Steam Deck 2 Rumors: Leaked AMD Chip Hints at Next-Gen Handheld

AMD Chip Leak Sparks Steam Deck 2 Rumors : A leaked AMD chip has sparked speculation that Valve may be testing hardware for the Steam Deck 2. The discovery appeared on Open Benchmarking, raising hopes for a next-generation gaming handheld. However, neither Valve nor AMD has confirmed that the processor is linked to the upcoming device.

Gainsborough Chip Reveals Early Specifications : The leaked AMD Gainsborough engineering sample reportedly features six CPU cores, 12 threads, and a 2.4GHz base clock. These details suggest a potential hardware upgrade over the current Steam Deck, which uses a four-core, eight-thread processor. However, the chip's final specifications remain unconfirmed.

Final Fantasy Connection Fuels Speculation : The Gainsborough codename has strengthened speculation about a possible Steam Deck 2 connection. The original Steam Deck's APU is known as Aerith, while the OLED model uses the Sephiroth codename. Both names relate to Final Fantasy VII characters, and Gainsborough is Aerith's surname. However, the naming link is not official confirmation.

Early Benchmark Shows Mixed Performance : The Gainsborough chip scored 3,508 points in a FurMark test, compared with 3,323 for the Steam Deck benchmark cited in reports. However, the systems used different resolutions and testing conditions. The early result does not establish how much faster the next-generation handheld could be when running actual games.

24GB Memory Appears in Test Setup : The leaked test system reportedly used 24GB of LPDDR5 memory, compared with 16GB in the Steam Deck OLED. This could indicate a possible memory configuration under evaluation, but it does not confirm the Steam Deck 2's final RAM capacity. Ongoing memory supply challenges could also influence future hardware costs.

Steam Deck 2 Launch Date Remains Unclear : Some reports point to late 2027 or 2028 for the potential arrival of related AMD hardware. However, that does not confirm a Steam Deck 2 launch window. Valve has not announced a release date, and memory prices, hardware development, and performance targets could affect its plans.

Valve's Next Handheld Still Needs a Major Upgrade : The Gainsborough leak offers an early hint that AMD may be developing hardware suitable for future gaming handhelds. Yet its performance, final specifications, and connection to Valve remain uncertain. The discovery is worth watching, but gamers should treat Steam Deck 2 rumors cautiously until Valve shares official details.
