First aired in 1966, Star Trek imagined technologies that seemed impossible at the time. Several concepts now resemble everyday devices, including mobile phones, tablets, voice-controlled computers and advanced medical tools. While modern inventions do not perfectly replicate their fictional counterparts, the similarities show how science fiction influenced technological imagination.

Communicators Became Mobile Phones

Star Trek’s handheld communicators allowed crew members to communicate wirelessly across long distances. Modern smartphones provide the same basic convenience through cellular networks, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Motorola’s 1996 StarTAC flip phone even reflected the communicator’s clamshell design, making this one of science fiction’s most recognisable technological parallels.

PADDs Resemble Modern Tablets

Personal Access Display Devices, or PADDs, were portable computers used for reading documents, accessing information and handling various tasks. Today’s tablets offer similar functions through touchscreen interfaces, wireless connectivity and powerful computing hardware. However, portable-computing concepts also developed independently outside Star Trek, so direct inspiration is difficult to establish.

Voice Computers Became AI Assistants

Star Trek characters regularly spoke naturally to ship computers to retrieve information or perform tasks. Modern voice assistants and conversational AI offer similar interactions, allowing users to ask questions, control devices and access digital services through speech. The technology has evolved significantly, although today’s systems remain different from fictional Starfleet computers.

Tricorders Inspired Medical Technology

The fictional tricorder could scan patients and rapidly identify medical conditions. Researchers have pursued similar portable diagnostic concepts, including the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, which challenged teams to develop compact technologies capable of monitoring health conditions. These systems demonstrate progress toward portable diagnostics, although no device fully matches the fictional tricorder.

Video Communication Went Mainstream

Star Trek frequently portrayed characters communicating through live video. Modern smartphones, laptops and conferencing platforms now make real-time video communication routine. However, the concept predates Star Trek: Bell Labs demonstrated its Picturephone technology publicly in 1964. This makes video calling an example of parallel technological development rather than a clear Star Trek invention.

Science Fiction Meets Reality

Star Trek’s influence is clearest in how it presented technology as portable, accessible and integrated into everyday life. Communicators, PADDs, voice interfaces and medical scanners now have real-world counterparts. Some similarities reflect direct inspiration, while others emerged independently. Either way, Star Trek helped popularise a compelling vision of technological possibility.
