A swollen power bank is one of the clearest signs that something is wrong inside. Stop using it immediately if its body looks puffed, raised, or uneven. Swelling can happen when the battery develops an internal fault. Do not press, bend, puncture, charge, or continue carrying a visibly swollen power bank.

It Gets Unusually Hot

Power banks can become slightly warm while charging devices, but excessive heat is a warning sign. If the charger becomes too hot to comfortably touch, disconnect it and let it cool. Repeated overheating may point to battery damage or an internal electrical problem. Avoid using it again until the issue is checked.

You Notice a Strange Smell

A strong chemical, burning, or unusual smell from a power bank should never be ignored. It may indicate a damaged battery or an internal fault. Unplug the charger immediately and move away from it. Do not try to open the casing or investigate the battery yourself, as damaged cells can become dangerous.

The Casing is Cracked or Damaged

A cracked, crushed, or badly damaged power bank should be taken out of use. Physical damage can affect the battery cells and protective circuits inside. Even if the charger still works normally, hidden damage may create a safety risk. Do not tape over serious damage and continue using the portable charger.

Charging Becomes Unreliable

If a power bank repeatedly stops charging, charges extremely slowly, or disconnects devices without reason, it may be nearing the end of its useful life. A faulty cable can also cause similar problems, so test with a known-good cable first. If the issue continues, replacing the power bank is safer.

The Battery Drains Far Too Quickly

A power bank that once charged your phone several times but now loses power rapidly may have a worn battery. Lithium-ion batteries naturally lose capacity over time and repeated charging cycles. Reduced capacity alone is not always dangerous, but sudden performance changes, heat, swelling, or other warning signs mean you should stop using it.

It has been dropped or exposed to Water

A major drop, crushing impact, or water exposure can damage a power bank even when there is no visible problem. Internal battery damage may not appear immediately. If this happens, stop using and charging the device. Do not attempt to dry, open, or repair a damaged lithium-ion battery yourself.
