How AI and IoT Are Making Smart Meters Smarter

IoT turns smart meters into connected energy devices. Meters can communicate with utility servers, send consumption data and alerts, and support remote functions such as meter reading and supply connection or disconnection. This reduces manual work and field visits.

AI transforms this constant stream of meter data into useful insights. Machine-learning systems can forecast electricity demand, identify unusual consumption patterns, detect faults, and help utilities plan power supply more efficiently.

Smart meters can also help detect electricity theft and technical losses. AI can identify abnormal usage patterns that may indicate tampering, illegal connections, or equipment problems. This helps DISCOMs improve revenue collection and reduce distribution losses.

Consumers can gain better control over electricity spending through smart-meter apps. Near real-time usage information, historical consumption, recharge options, and low-balance alerts can help households monitor consumption and manage their energy budgets.

India is rapidly expanding smart metering through the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). As of December 2025, 3.90 crore smart meters had been installed under RDSS, while 5.28 crore had been installed nationwide under various schemes.

The next challenge is making this connected energy network secure and scalable. Cybersecurity, data management, privacy, and interoperability remain important as millions of devices connect to the grid. With AI and IoT, smart meters are moving beyond billing to become intelligent tools for a more efficient power sector.
