Ben Affleck’s Animals Premieres on Netflix, Bringing Kidnapping, Political Intrigue and Family Drama Together

Ben Affleck’s thriller Animals premieres on Netflix on October 9, 2026, bringing a tense story of family, crime and political ambition. Affleck directs and stars in the film, which follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife as they struggle to save their kidnapped son.

A Political Candidate Faces a Family Crisis

In Animals, Ben Affleck plays Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose life is shattered when his son is kidnapped. The crisis forces him to confront difficult decisions while balancing political ambitions with his responsibilities as a father. The story explores how personal emergencies can threaten even the most powerful public figures.

Kerry Washington Plays Affleck’s Wife

Kerry Washington stars as Abigail Kimball, the wife of Affleck’s character. As the couple desperately searches for a way to secure their son’s release, their relationship faces immense pressure. The film examines how fear, uncertainty and desperation can expose hidden tensions within a marriage, placing the family’s future at the centre of its suspenseful narrative.

A Star-Studded Supporting Cast

Animals features an ensemble cast that includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Ray Fisher and Matt Gerald. Their involvement adds depth to the film’s world of political ambition, secrecy and escalating danger. With established performers from film and television, the thriller brings together a diverse cast for a story driven by family conflict and high-stakes decisions.

Ben Affleck Returns as Director

Alongside playing the lead role, Affleck directs and co-wrote Animals with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray. The project continues his work behind the camera, following directing efforts such as Argo and The Town. This combination of acting, writing and directing gives Affleck a central creative role in shaping the film’s suspenseful atmosphere and examination of difficult moral choices.

A Race Against Time for the Ransom

The kidnapping drives the film’s central conflict, as the parents scramble to raise the ransom while confronting the consequences of their previous choices. With much of their money tied up in the mayoral campaign, the family faces a financial and emotional crisis. The desperate search for funds raises questions about privilege, power and what people are willing to sacrifice to protect their children.

Netflix Expands Its Thriller Line-up

Animals joins Netflix’s October 2026 entertainment slate, bringing crime, political drama and family suspense to the streaming platform. The film is produced in partnership with Artists Equity, the company founded by Affleck, Matt Damon and Gerry Cardinale. Its October 9 release gives audiences another major Hollywood thriller to consider alongside the platform’s other seasonal film offerings.
