CSR is considered to be the most pious asset of corporate houses and business companies. Renowned companies namely Walt Disney, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, and many more keep conducting corporate social responsibility workshops and programs to contribute their bits to the society.
The world has been hit by troubled times during 2020 and that persists. Business was brought to a halt and the society seemed to tumble down with lack of work. Reports have it that how the pandemic has affected academic and educational institutions and learning was stopped. UNESCO reports that over 100 million schools were closed.
Capital one Coders Program, an initiative that was brought into effect back in the year 2014, gained its maximum force amidst the pandemic. The closure of schools instilled an anxiety in the students. The situation was even more problematic for the students belonging to lower income households who were sceptical of their achievements.
However, coders summer program which is actually a CSR strategy by Capital One made learning continue for school going kids by offering them an enrolment into the STEM programming. Over 3500 students had enrolled for the program with a passion for artificial intelligence and video games creation.
Participants have expressed their satisfaction on being able to learn more about video gaming and coding. They have particularly pinned on the creative play they had during the program and the unique ways in which mentors have assisted them to implement their ideas.
Coders summer program, conducted virtually, brought in instructors associated with Capital One to provide AI teachings for creating video games. Besides, enrollers were also taught coding and other diverse computer skills to provide an edge to their learning achievements.
The objective of the program was to defeat the 'summer slide' which means the academic losses the students have suffered. They named it 'Covid-19 Slide'. The losses that were suffered were immense:
1. Students were plunged into psychological disorders due to lack of learning and inactivity.
2. Some had to suffer a loss of a year full or half.
Staunchly believing that the children of today will be the future of AI as the agenda remains to be 'AI for everyone', Matthew McCurdy, Manager of Capital One has expressed his hopefulness about the program. According to him, this program was of utmost necessity to not just curb the 'Covid-19 Slide' but also to provide an exposure to students to explore the diversity of computer science. Young minds, brimming with rich ideas, can transform and redefine the concepts of AI, robotics technology, everything that computer science and skills entail.
Coders summer program, a CSR initiative, was a move to enhance the socio-economic mobility. Benefits of CSR are multifarious. Companies, time and again, have been counting on the benefits of CSR for being in harmony with the environment they function within.
Having said that, the program designed by Capital One was not only beneficial for students enthused in computer science and artificial intelligence but also it was an employment opportunity for the instructors.
Most importantly, the program helped the participants to get out of ennui and inactivity which encourages creativity greatly. Anticipatively, the program will continue, offering avenues of explorations for the students and learners taking keen interest in computer science, AI, and robotics technology.
