SoftBank Group reported about ¥26.6 trillion in consolidated borrowings at June 30, 2026, as higher US interest rates sharpened scrutiny of heavily indebted technology investors. That total equals roughly USD 164 billion at the quarter-end exchange rate.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve's September rate increase raised concerns about financing costs and possible spillovers into risk assets, including cryptocurrencies. Company filings describe the debt, but they do not link SoftBank's finances directly to crypto prices.

A viral post drew attention to the group's debt and its bond interest payments. Yet official corporate and central bank records cannot independently confirm the market-price claims in that post.

SoftBank Debt Reaches USD 164B as Financing Costs Rise

SoftBank's first-quarter report distinguishes group-wide borrowings from debt at the parent company. The parent owed ¥12.2 trillion, or approximately USD 75 billion. Consolidated totals also include subsidiaries such as SoftBank Corp. That difference matters when comparing parent-level liabilities with the wider group's balance sheet.

The report attributes higher interest costs partly to a USD 11.5 billion loan secured against Arm shares in December 2025. SoftBank also drew USD 20 billion through bridge financing in April 2026.

About ¥5.4 trillion of borrowings carry non-recourse terms, the report states. Lenders on those facilities can pursue pledged holdings, including Arm and SoftBank Corp. shares, rather than other parent assets.

On September 24, SoftBank announced approximately USD 11.1 billion in dollar and euro notes, with issuance expected September 29. S&P and Fitch assigned BB+ ratings, one grade below investment grade. The notes have neither collateral nor guarantees.

Annual coupon payments across those notes total roughly USD 1.03 billion. Their stated annual coupon rates range from 7.1% to 9.75%, reflecting the cost attached to this borrowing.

OpenAI Investment Reaches USD 64.6B After Bond Sale

SoftBank confirmed on October 1 that it completed the third USD 10 billion installment of a USD 30 billion follow-on OpenAI investment. Earlier installments arrived on April 1 and July 1.

The transaction used a USD 730 billion pre-money valuation, according to the quarterly report. SoftBank's total OpenAI investment reached USD 64.6 billion, representing an estimated 13% stake.

Bond proceeds funded the final installment and helped close temporary financing. SoftBank had signed a USD 40 billion bridge facility with five banks in March, with repayment due March 25, 2027.

Its October 1 announcement said the company repaid all amounts drawn under that facility and canceled the unused USD 10 billion portion.

Meanwhile, first-quarter net income declined 17.7% year over year to ¥347.3 billion. Intel shares contributed ¥1,332.9 billion in investment gains, while SoftBank recorded no OpenAI investment gain.

Cash declined from ¥5.36 trillion to ¥3.93 trillion. Despite those changes, the company stated that no material uncertainty cast doubt on its ability to continue operating.

Fed Rate Hike Raises Questions for Crypto Markets

On September 16, the Federal Reserve lifted its benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75%–4.00%. Officials voted unanimously and described inflation as elevated.

Fed projections placed the median year-end 2026 policy rate at 4.1%, consistent with another quarter-point increase. Policymakers also projected 3.7% personal consumption expenditures inflation for 2026. Rate forecasts do not establish which meeting may deliver another increase.

Separately, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 3.7% annual consumer price inflation for September. Higher borrowing rates can raise refinancing costs for companies that need fresh capital.

Official company and Fed documents establish no direct price connection or evidence that cryptocurrency traders changed positions because of SoftBank's borrowing. The potential channel runs through broader investor appetite for risk assets.

The Fed's next scheduled policy meeting falls on October 27–28. Traders can compare its statement with upcoming inflation data and further SoftBank disclosures, without treating market speculation as verified company information.

Conclusion

SoftBank's reported consolidated debt reached approximately USD 164 billion, while its OpenAI investment totaled USD 64.6 billion. The company repaid its bridge borrowing, although higher US rates remain relevant to future financing costs. No official evidence establishes a direct connection to cryptocurrency prices. Investors can monitor Federal Reserve decisions and company filings.
