Physical copies of Resident Evil Requiem on PlayStation 5 have reportedly generated more revenue than the game’s entire Xbox business, including both digital and physical sales. The figures come from gaming industry analyst Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics and offer an interesting look at the continued demand for physical games.
According to reports, Resident Evil Requiem has sold around 1.3 million physical copies on PlayStation. These sales generated more than USD 92.3 million in revenue, accounting for approximately 15% of the game’s total revenue across platforms.
Physical PlayStation copies also accounted for about 30.2% of the game’s revenue on Sony’s platform. The figures suggest that boxed copies remain an important part of the game’s commercial performance, even as digital purchases become increasingly common.
The most striking figure is the comparison between PS5 disc sales and the game’s performance on Xbox. Elliot’s analysis estimates that physical PlayStation copies generated 1.8 times more revenue than all Xbox versions combined, including digital and physical purchases.
The comparison does not mean that physical sales account for most of the game’s overall revenue. Instead, it highlights the difference between revenue from PS5 discs and the game's combined performance across Xbox formats.
These figures are estimates from an analytics firm rather than official platform-by-platform sales disclosures from Capcom, Sony or Microsoft.
The analysis also points to continued interest in physical releases beyond Capcom’s horror title. Marvel’s Wolverine, for example, reportedly sold around 800,000 physical copies out of 2.6 million total sales, putting disc sales close to one-third of its overall performance.
Meanwhile, physical sales accounted for less than 30% of revenue for several other major releases, including 007 First Light, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Crimson Desert. The figures suggest that physical demand varies considerably between games, rather than following one consistent pattern.
Japan continues to stand out for its preference for physical PlayStation games, particularly titles from Japanese publishers such as Capcom. Elliot noted that physical game purchases remain deeply established in the country’s gaming culture.
Games such as Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword also recorded substantial physical sales in Japan. While digital distribution still dominates much of the gaming market, Resident Evil Requiem shows that physical releases can still generate significant revenue, especially for major console titles.
