Warner Bros Pictures Animation has confirmed that a new animated Powerpuff Girls movie is in development. The project was unveiled during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, one of the animation industry’s biggest annual events.

While studio sources have confirmed the film, no formal deal has been finalized. So, story details, casting information, and a release timeline have not yet been announced.

A Franchise That Defined Cartoon Network

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998. It became one of the network’s most recognizable franchises.

The series follows Blossoms, Bubbles, and Buttercup, three young girls with extraordinary powers. According to the show’s origin, Professor Utonium created them while attempting to make the perfect little girls using sugar, spice, and everything nice.

The accidental addition of a mysterious substance known as Chemical X transformed the experiment, giving the trio superhuman abilities.

Previous Adaptations Had Mixed Results

The original animated series ran for six seasons before concluding in 2005. Its popularity led to several attempts to expand the franchise beyond television.

Warner Bros released The Powerpuff Girls Movie in 2002, exploring the origins of the superhero trio. Despite strong brand recognition, the movie did not perform well financially, bringing in only about $16 million worldwide against its $11 million budget.

The next iteration of the franchise was the 2016 reboot of the TV series. In addition, there was an attempt at a live-action adaptation that was going to air on TV, but failed.

Warner Bros Expands Animation Sale

The upcoming Powerpuff Girls movie falls into the animated movie lineup at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. The next theater movie released by the studio will be The Cat in the Hat, due in November, starring Bill Hader in the leading role.

The other projects in the development phase include Bad Fairies, featuring Cynthia Erivo; Margie Claus, with Melissa McCarthy in the lead role; and Oh, the Places You'll Go!, with Ariana Grande and Josh Gad. The success of these moves will determine whether the studio’s expansion into animation was worth the risk.
