Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) new Data Center and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, highlighting the importance of secure digital infrastructure in protecting India’s financial system.
Addressing the gathering on October 25, Modi said a secure banking system requires robust data centers and powerful computing systems. He explained that the new facilities may strengthen India’s digital financial infrastructure and advance technological self-reliance.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman remarked that the new data center will house critical RBI IT systems such as RTGS and NEFT. She stressed the need for resilient infrastructure to ensure financial stability and foster long-term economic growth.
The data center would enhance the coverage, efficiency, and reliability of digital financial services and serve as a secure technological backbone for India’s growing digital finance ecosystem.
The RBI data center occupies 18.55 acres in Info Valley-II, Jatni, Odisha. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das laid the foundation stone for the data center on March 22, 2023. The project cost was Rs. 169 crore.
Cybersecurity Training Institute will serve as a dedicated platform for training and research on cybersecurity and enterprise technology. Sitharaman also believes that the institute will help build expertise in cybersecurity, AI, and other emerging technologies.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra also spoke on the occasion and emphasized the apex body's willingness to leverage emerging technologies and improve digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and indigenous technological capabilities.
He also said such efforts would help achieve the goal of India becoming a developed nation by 2047.
