OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Agent, a powerful new capability that enables its AI chatbot to perform complex, multi-step tasks for users. It can do everything from organizing events to creating research reports.
The feature represents a significant leap beyond traditional chatbots, transitioning into a more interactive and independent assistant.
ChatGPT Agent is intended to manage complete workflows on a virtual computer. It can ‘do work for you,’ as OpenAI states, by mixing text browsing, code execution, app integration, and tool-based reasoning.
This implies that users can now give tasks such as ‘summarize my upcoming meetings from my calendar and recent news’ or ‘analyze rivals and design a presentation.’
The feature rolls out today for Pro, Team, and ChatGPT Plus users. Pro users will have access within the day, followed by Plus and Team users within the next few days. Enterprise and education users will receive access later this summer.
Interestingly, users based in the European Economic Area and Switzerland will have to wait longer as OpenAI navigates regulatory compliance.
Pro users will receive 400 messages per month, while other paid accounts receive 40, with additional usage available for purchase with credits.
OpenAI set out a list of things it can do:
Summarize inboxes and set meetings on Google Calendar.
Plan meals and buy food online.
Examine data and create presentations.
Work with spreadsheets and edit live web information.
Automate weekly report-type tasks.
The agent selects the optimal utility for every task, whether it is a visual browser, terminal, or text interface, and accesses sites safely under user supervision. Users can also view their operations in real-time and intervene if necessary.

According to OpenAI product leaders Yash Kumar and Isa Fulford, the software is driven by a new model that has been trained using reinforcement learning. The company has brought together teams that developed earlier tools, Operator and Deep Research, to create this feature.
In contrast to earlier bots, ChatGPT Agent operates on a complete virtual computer, enabling it to possess greater and deeper capabilities.
Though some tasks will necessarily take a little longer, the group insisted that the focus is on efficiency rather than speed. ‘Even if it takes 30 minutes, it’s quicker than doing it yourself,’ said Fulford.
Before engaging in any actions that cannot be reversed, such as sending mail or making reservations, the agent obtains user affirmation. Monetary transactions are currently unavailable, and customers must remain on task-oriented pages for security purposes. Protections also exist against misuse involving biological or chemical materials.
The release reflects the broader industry's push toward agentic AI, tools capable of autonomously executing digital tasks. As companies like Amazon, Meta, and Google race to develop similar systems, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent could shape the next era of personal and enterprise productivity.
