OpenAI plans to stop supplying its models to Cursor on November 12, 2026, after SpaceX acquired Anysphere, Cursor’s parent company.
The decision will end nearly four years of cooperation between OpenAI and the AI coding platform. OpenAI linked the move to contract compliance and a change-of-control clause. Cursor said OpenAI models handle about 5% of its traffic, limiting the immediate operational effect.
OpenAI said it notified SpaceX that it plans to wind down its Cursor agreement. The company proposed November 12 as the cutoff date. It said this date gives developers the maximum notice allowed under the contract.
The company described the decision as ‘incredibly tough.’ However, it said it lacked confidence that SpaceX would follow its service terms. OpenAI based that concern on past dealings with companies Elon Musk controls. It cited alleged contract breaches involving X and service violations involving xAI.
OpenAI also said its custom Cursor agreement includes a cancellation window after an ownership change. SpaceX completed its purchase of Anysphere on August 14, according to a regulatory filing. SpaceX’s all-stock transaction valued Cursor at USD 60 billion.
Moreover, OpenAI said it would not provide future models to Cursor. The company referred to its upcoming Astra model while explaining its compliance concerns. It said advanced systems require closer control over how large partners use them.
Cursor co-founder Michael Truell said OpenAI models represent about 5% of traffic on the platform. He added that Cursor and OpenAI were discussing the transition. Truell also noted that Cursor ranked among OpenAI’s earliest customers.
The reported 5% share leaves most current Cursor traffic on models from other providers. Anthropic later said it planned to increase computing support for Claude models within Cursor. The company did not provide public figures for the added capacity.
Cursor built its service around giving developers several model choices for different coding tasks. The cutoff removes OpenAI from that menu after November 12. Other providers will continue offering models through the coding platform.
Musk responded to OpenAI’s announcement by saying, “I couldn’t care less.” He also criticized OpenAI’s leadership. Reuters reported that the dispute follows years of conflict between Musk and OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman.
SpaceX announced the Anysphere agreement in June and completed the acquisition in August. A Securities and Exchange Commission filing said Anysphere shares converted into about 389.3 million SpaceX Class A shares.
Cursor said joining SpaceX would provide access to “the largest fleet of GPUs in the world.” The company said that computing capacity would support model development and lower costs. Cursor now operates within a group that also includes xAI and X.
Meanwhile, spending on AI models and platforms continues to rise. Gartner projected global end-user spending would reach USD 64.252 billion in 2026. That compares with USD 39.311 billion in 2025, representing 63.4% annual growth.
OpenAI said the cancellation follows a contract clause tied to Anysphere’s ownership change. Cursor users will retain OpenAI model access until the proposed cutoff date. After that date, the models will no longer appear through Cursor.
OpenAI said it will support developers during the change. However, it did not identify specific transition plans for affected users. It also provided no timetable for companies using OpenAI models in existing development workflows.
