OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored content to logged-in adults on Free and Go plans. The rollout began on August 27, 2026, as OpenAI expanded advertising in one of ChatGPT’s largest markets. Ads will appear below relevant responses and remain separate from ChatGPT answers.
Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers will continue using ChatGPT without ads. OpenAI said the system will keep advertisements away from users under 18 and sensitive topics, including health, mental health, and politics.
The India launch targets adults using Free and Go accounts, with the Go plan priced at Rs. 399 monthly. OpenAI is using relevant conversation context to place sponsored products or services below responses when suitable. More than 50 brands are expected to launch campaigns this week through WPP and Omnicom, OpenAI’s first agency partners in India.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions, said, “India is one of the most dynamic markets in the world for how people use ChatGPT to learn, build, and discover.”
OpenAI expects ads to appear in roughly one out of five queries for eligible Indian users, mainly during commercial intent.
OpenAI said advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s answers or change how responses prioritize user needs. Advertisers will not receive access to chats, history, memories, or personal information. Campaign reports will provide aggregate figures such as impressions and clicks.
The advertising expansion also creates a new channel for Indian businesses seeking customers during product research. OpenAI will open self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager access in India on September 4. Businesses can start campaigns with daily budgets from Rs. 725.
The move adds advertising to OpenAI’s growing revenue strategy while keeping premium plans ad-free. OpenAI also plans more ad formats, campaign goals, and buying options as the India rollout develops.
