Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, reported a loss of 278 billion Norwegian kroner (USD 29.71 billion) in the third quarter of 2026 as rising interest rates weighed on its investment portfolio.

The fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), posted a 0.5% loss on its global investments during the quarter, according to results released on October 22.

The decline highlights the pressure facing major institutional investors as changing interest-rate conditions affect bond valuations and portfolio performance.

Rising Interest Rates Weigh on Fixed-Income Investments

Deputy CEO Trond Grande said the fund’s performance was nearly flat, though it ended the quarter slightly negative.

“The return on the fund was almost flat as it ended on a slight negative note, owing to interest rate hikes causing poor performance of the fund’s fixed income investment portfolio,” stated Grande.

Fixed income investments such as bonds are affected by changes in the interest rate. An increase in interest rates reduces a bond’s value, as its payments fall below those of newly issued bonds offering higher yields.

These results follow a positive first half of 2026, when the fund’s investment return was 9.4%. This was due to gains in equity markets, especially Asian technology stocks.

World’s Largest Sovereign Wealth Fund

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, commonly known as the oil fund, invests revenues generated from the country’s oil and gas production. It aims to manage this wealth for future generations.

The fund is valued at approximately USD 2.3 trillion and remains one of the world’s most influential investors. It owns an average of 1.5% of all publicly listed companies globally, making it the world’s largest single investor in listed equities.

Its portfolio is diversified across approximately 7,100 companies, alongside bonds, real estate and renewable energy projects.

Global Markets Remain in Focus

The quarterly loss comes as investors consider interest rate trends and their impact on markets. For a fund with significant bond exposure, valuation changes can affect overall performance even as other assets do well.

The most recent data show the difficulties of managing a global fund across asset classes. Future performance will depend on market trends, interest rates, and equity, among other factors.
