Microsoft released its October 2026 Patch Tuesday security updates, addressing 1,411 vulnerabilities across its products. The record-breaking release includes three zero-day vulnerabilities, one of which attackers have actively exploited. The update also fixes 70 critical flaws, highlighting the importance of timely security patching for businesses and individual users.
The October security release marks a significant milestone in Microsoft's vulnerability remediation efforts. According to BleepingComputer, “The company addressed 1,411 flaws disclosed in its October 13 update. The reported total excludes 348 vulnerabilities that Microsoft patched earlier in the month through separate releases.”
The vulnerabilities span several categories, including elevation of privilege, remote code execution, information disclosure, denial of service, security feature bypass and spoofing. Elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities account for the largest share, with 677 flaws. The update also covers 317 remote code execution vulnerabilities and 254 information disclosure issues.
Microsoft classified 70 vulnerabilities as critical. These include 57 remote code execution flaws, 11 elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities and two spoofing issues. Successful exploitation of severe vulnerabilities could allow attackers to execute malicious code, gain elevated access or compromise sensitive information. The October release addresses three zero-day vulnerabilities. One was actively exploited before Microsoft released a fix, while two had been publicly disclosed.
The actively exploited vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-96951, affects Windows Shell. It allows attackers to bypass the Mark of the Web security feature, which helps Windows identify files obtained from potentially untrusted sources. Attackers could exploit the weakness to weaken security protections when users interact with malicious files.
The second vulnerability, CVE-2026-108398, affects the .NET Framework. This allows an authenticated attacker to bypass Windows Defender Application Control restrictions and run unauthorized applications within a protected process. The third flaw, CVE-2026-92707, affects MessagePack-CSharp and creates a denial-of-service risk. Looking ahead, Microsoft's October updates cover:
Windows
Office
Exchange Server
SharePoint
.NET
Microsoft also announced that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro have reached the end of support. Thus, making an upgrade to a supported release important for continued security protection.
