Meta has banned ads from TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, across its platforms in seven countries. The move covers the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The ban doesn’t only stop direct ads from ByteDance, but Meta has even blocked third-party ads that direct users to TikTok and other ByteDance apps in these markets.

Meta and TikTok have been competing hard in the social media market with similar features and audience bases. Therefore, while talking about the ban, Meta revealed, “We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps. Declining promotional services to a competitor is a normal business practice across industries. We will continue to compete on product quality and user experience.” However, TikTok and ByteDance haven’t yet commented on the move.

There’s another angle to this ban. This move came at a time when social media firms face growing pressure over child safety and user protection. In August, Meta agreed to improve safety measures for young users as part of a deal with US states. At the time, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company urged TikTok and YouTube to follow the steps it agreed to take on teen safety.

TikTok, however, reached a deal with Alabama in September over usage limits and age checks. At the same time, TikTok continues to face pressure in the US, where it now operates through a joint venture with majority American ownership. The latest move adds another layer to the fight between the two social media giants.

Meta Pushes Reels While Competing With TikTok

Meta has added more video features that look like TikTok's format. Instagram Reels is a key part of this plan, helping Meta keep users watching videos on its own apps. Yet while Meta competes with TikTok for views, it doesn't want to sell ad space that helps TikTok gain more users.

For marketers, this difference matters. Meta wants people to spend more time on Facebook and Instagram, not on a rival app. By blocking TikTok promotions, it can protect its business while competing for the same viewers.

Meta's move shows how tough social media competition has become. Marketers should avoid relying on one platform and keep their options open. By using different channels and staying up to date with ad rules, brands can reach their target users even when platform policies change.
