Meta has apologized after Instagram wrongly suspended the account of the No Kings Coalition, a group that opposes US President Donald Trump’s policies and helps organize protests and voter outreach events. The incident happened on October 17, when the Instagram profile of the group went offline.

It was a nationwide day of action ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The suspension was reportedly for 90 minutes but the impact lasted for hours. The outage came on a busy day, when the group and its partners held nearly 3,000 events across the United States.

Meta said the suspension activity was linked to Anthropic’s Claude AI tool. The company officially stated that the AI tool kept accessing profiles, posts, and hashtags at around four times the usual rate within a short period, which triggered the security system of Instagram. This activity looked like bot traffic and led to the account’s suspension.

The incident shows that automatic checks can get things wrong. These systems help stop spam and harmful activity, but they can also flag normal actions. When a public account is suspended by mistake, even a short outage can cut off contact with followers and disrupt important work.

Who is Responsible When an Account is Suspended by Mistake?

When something happens, it’s not wise to blame only one person or a single AI tool. Instead, the AI tool, people who have been using it, and Instagram’s security system all have different parts to play in it. Claude carried out the tasks it was prompted to. It was the people who gave it the commands. Instagram is responsible for the safety checks that decide whether an account should be suspended.

Notably, Instagram must have a clearer method to review a suspension. It must review the appeal quickly and restore access if an account was banned without any proper reason. Users should not have to spend hours trying to find out why they lost access.

For now, Meta has apologized for the incident, but it has raised a wider question. Now that more people have been using AI tools for daily activities, platforms need to be cautious about suspending accounts. Clear answers and quick support can help prevent a small mistake from causing a bigger problem.
