Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has outlined an ambitious infrastructure expansion plan as the company focuses on artificial intelligence.

In a post on social media, Zuckerberg described Meta Compute as a “top-level initiative” that will underpin the company’s long-term AI ambitions, including what he has earlier framed as AI superintelligence.

Zuckerberg has revealed that Meta plans to build “tens of gigawatts this decade and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time,” signalling one of the largest infrastructure investments in the tech industry. Meta’s management of its employees, finances, and partnerships to create this capacity will become a strategic advantage.

Who will Drive Meta’s Infrastructure Strategy?

The company’s existing infrastructure leadership remains central to the plan. Santosh Janardhan, Meta’s Head of Infrastructure, will continue to oversee the technical architecture, software stack, silicon program, developer productivity, and the build-out and operation of Meta’s global data centre fleet and networks.

At the same time, Meta is creating a new group focused on long-term capacity planning. This unit will be led by Daniel Gross, a recent hire and former CEO of Safe Superintelligence. His team will work on capacity strategy, supplier engagement, industry trend analysis, and planning and business models.

What Role will Dina Powell McCormick play?

The infrastructure push follows Meta’s announcement that former board member Dina Powell McCormick has joined the company as President and Vice Chairman. She will work closely with Janardhan and Gross on partnerships with governments and sovereign entities to build, deploy, invest in, and finance Meta’s global infrastructure.

Why Infrastructure Sits at the Heart of Meta’s AI Ambitions

The latest announcement stresses that large-scale computing capacity has become an indispensable factor for Meta’s future. As AI models continue to expand in scale and power, control over the underlying computational infrastructure is increasingly seen as a crucial competitive edge, one that Meta is now trying to achieve as quickly as possible.
