The London Stock Exchange (LSE) is set to take a significant step toward extended market access by launching a new overnight trading platform, LSE 24, in the first half of 2027. The initiative reflects the growing demand for longer trading hours among global investors and positions the exchange alongside other major markets that are expanding beyond traditional trading sessions.
For the investors, extended trading times can provide ample scope for responding to overnight news and events, thus contributing to the increasing trend of stock markets adjusting to an ever-evolving digital economy.
The trading system will provide the opportunity to exchange products, which include those replicating indices of equity markets of the UK and the US. The trading sessions will take place between 5:00 PM and 7:50 AM. GMT, with an intermission of 30 minutes at 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM for end-of-day activities. At the same time, the main trading floor will be open between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM.
This strategy aims to provide more flexibility for investors to react to any news that could affect the markets in various time zones. The extended trading will make it easier for market players to manage risks outside regular exchange business hours. Retail investors, especially from Asia, have been seeking continuous access to financial markets, just as in the case of cryptocurrencies.

The choice made by the LSE comes at a time when exchanges worldwide are reviewing their trading hours to stay ahead of the competition. Nasdaq is planning to increase trading hours on weekdays to 23 hours, while CME has already started offering round-the-clock trading for cryptocurrencies’ futures and options. While initially the plan aims at exchange-traded products, it could eventually cover other assets as well.
