Instagram users are using ChatGPT to give their photographs a retro makeover, with a new trend recreating people as they might have looked in the 1980s. The AI-generated images feature period-style hairstyles, clothing, accessories and backgrounds, giving modern photographs an unmistakably ’80s appearance.
The trend has gained traction through Instagram Stories, where users are sharing the ‘Chat, how would I look in the ’80s’ prompt and using the ‘add yours’ sticker to encourage others to join in.
The trend uses artificial intelligence to transform an existing photograph into an image inspired by the 1980s while keeping the person’s recognizable facial features and appearance.
Users can upload their photograph to ChatGPT and ask the chatbot to adapt their hairstyle, clothes, accessories, surroundings, and overall visual style to the decade. The Brazilian ChatGPT account has also shared a prompt for users who want to try the trend.
How to Create Your ’80s Photo With ChatGPT
Creating the image requires a personal photograph and access to ChatGPT. Users can open ChatGPT, tap the ‘+’ button, upload their photograph, and enter the prompt.
The suggested command is:
“Create an image of how I would look in the 1980s, keeping my recognizable characteristics and appearance, but adapting my hair, clothes, accessories, setting and aesthetics to the era.” ChatGPT then uses the uploaded photograph as a reference and generates an image based on the requested decade.
You Can Customize the Generated Image: The first image does not have to be the final version. Users can continue the conversation with ChatGPT and request changes to specific elements.
These can include hairstyles, moustaches, accessories, and details in the background. Users can also ask for elements such as a ‘brick’ mobile phone, vehicles in the background or settings such as a disco, arcade, 1980s gym, beach or birthday party.
Once the final image is ready, users can save the image and share it on Instagram.

The ’80s trend is not the first social media craze built around AI-generated photographs. The previous trends included creating caricatures based on a person’s profession and generating images of people hugging their favorite celebrity.
