Instagram is tightening its approach to AI-generated personas by introducing a clearer label for accounts built around synthetic identities. The Meta-owned platform is renaming its existing ‘AI creator’ tag to ‘AI-generated profile,’ making it clearer when the person behind an account is not human.
The new disclosure applies to accounts where an AI-generated person is the central identity. This includes virtual influencers, synthetic models, digitally created lifestyle personalities, and fictional characters that post and interact like human creators.
Creators can add the label by editing their Instagram profile and switching on the ‘AI-generated profile’ option. Once applied, the disclosure will appear on the profile. It may also be shown alongside content where there is no separate indication that the image, video or post was created or edited with AI.
Instagram said the label is not meant for every creator who uses AI. A photographer using AI to touch up an image, a creator using AI for captions, or a real influencer experimenting with generative design tools does not need to identify the entire account as AI-generated. The focus is whether the profile presents an AI-made person as its personality.
Instagram said accounts featuring an AI-generated person without the label could have their reach limited.

If the platform detects an unlabeled AI-generated profile, the creator may receive a notification, and the account may no longer be eligible for recommendations. This could reduce how often posts are shown to people who do not already follow the account, including through recommended content, Explore and other discovery-led areas.
Creators who proactively apply the label will not be penalized simply for running an AI-generated profile.
Those whose accounts are restricted can either add the AI-generated profile label or appeal the decision through Instagram’s Account Status section if they believe the platform made an error. A successful appeal can restore the profile and its content’s eligibility for recommendations.
The earlier ‘AI creator’ label could suggest that anyone using generative AI needed to disclose their account. The new wording instead focuses on whether the identity users see and interact with is actually human or AI-generated.
The change comes as AI influencers, virtual models and fictional personalities become increasingly realistic, making it harder for users to distinguish between real creators and synthetic identities.
The update is also likely to affect brands and marketers as virtual ambassadors become more common in fashion, beauty, wellness, travel and lifestyle campaigns.
