HONOR is preparing to launch its Magic9 series in September. However, according to reports, Magic9 Pro will probably be the most exciting model in the lineup. The model reportedly will feature a 1:1 camera sensor, departing from the standard build of Android phones. A 1:1 sensor means both the left-to-right and up-and-down measurements are the same.

The square shape of the camera doesn’t mean that the images will be captured in a square frame. Instead, users will be able to capture more of a scene and use software to crop the image for different formats. This could help with selfies, video calls, live streams, and short videos.

Additionally, leaks suggest the phone may come with two 200MP rear cameras. One of them could be a periscope telephoto camera. The phone is also tipped to get a 50MP ultrawide camera. HONOR is reportedly working with ARRI as well, suggesting a greater focus on mobile video.

HONOR May Start a New Selfie Camera Trend

HONOR may not be the only phone maker looking at this design. Reports suggest OPPO is also exploring a 1:1 front camera sensor for a future Find X10 series phone. Other Chinese brands are reportedly testing the idea as well.

For users, the biggest benefit could be better framing. A square sensor gives the camera more room to work with. The 1:1 selfie sensor may get the most attention, but the rear cameras could be the real star. Two 200MP sensors would give HONOR plenty of room to improve photo quality. The periscope camera could also make long-distance shots more useful.

ARRI’s reported involvement adds another interesting touch. If these reports are correct, HONOR is clearly aiming to make the Magic9 Pro a camera-first flagship. The phone could bring some fresh ideas to a market where camera upgrades are getting harder to spot.
