Greece’s parliament approved a social media ban for children under 15 on Friday, October 23, amid growing concerns about minors’ health and safety. The new law takes effect January 1, 2027, requiring social platforms to restrict underage access and introduce reliable age verification measures. The government aims to reduce excessive scrolling, protect children’s wellbeing and give families stronger support against harmful online habits.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said platforms have approximately two and a half months to develop age checks while protecting users’ privacy. The restrictions form part of Greece’s wider effort to address sleep disruption, reduced concentration and less time spent with friends. Officials are also working with the European Commission and six other European Union countries to develop a coordinated age verification approach.
Social media companies must find reliable ways to distinguish users below 15 from older users before allowing access. Greece’s digital tools, including Kids Wallet and Gov.gr Wallet, could help verify age without exposing unnecessary personal information. Platforms may also choose other compliant solutions that meet privacy and regulatory requirements.
The new rules will affect existing accounts as well as new registrations, requiring platforms to check users’ ages again. Regulators will monitor compliance through the European Union’s Digital Services Act framework. Companies that fail to meet applicable obligations could face enforcement action under the relevant EU rules.
Greece’s decision follows Australia’s legislation restricting social media access for minors last year. France also approved a similar measure, although its Constitutional Council struck down that law in August. Several European countries are now examining ways to limit children’s exposure to social media.
The Greek government says the policy will help parents tackle what it calls “endless scrolling.” Officials believe excessive platform use can interfere with children’s sleep, focus and real-world friendships. The measure builds on existing steps, including restrictions on mobile phone use in schools.
The ban’s impact will depend on effective age checks, privacy safeguards and consistent enforcement. Platforms now face a limited preparation period before the January 2027 start date.
