Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are opening their advanced AI tools to up to 200 European researchers. The program also offers USD 3 million in computing credits to help scientists carry out their work. Once the program starts, selected scientists will get access to multiple scientific tools developed by Google DeepMind, including AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve, and AlphaEarth Foundations.

AlphaFold 3 helps scientists study proteins and other molecules, while WeatherNext supports weather forecasts. Similarly, AlphaGenome helps researchers study DNA and AlphaEvolve can help improve computer algorithms. Finally, AlphaEarth Foundations supports research on the planet.

This scheme was announced on October 14 and aims to help researchers solve difficult problems and speed up scientific studies. The tools can support work in areas such as weather forecasts, DNA research, and the study of molecules. For scientists with limited funds, this access could make it easier to use AI tools that are costly to run.

Can USD 3 Million Cover the Cost of AI Research?

Advanced AI tools need powerful computers, large amounts of data, and time to run. These needs can make research costly. Large universities and labs may have the money and equipment to run such projects, while smaller teams often face limits.

Google's USD 3 million in computing credits could help close part of this gap. Researchers may be able to test ideas and start projects without paying the full cost upfront. However, the final benefit will depend on how the credits are shared, how long they last, and which services they cover. The company has not shared all these details. Once the credits run out, teams may need grants or other funds to continue their work.

Google's program could help more European scientists use advanced AI in their research. Still, short-term access may not be enough for projects that take years to finish. Continued funding will be key if smaller teams are to build on early results and keep their work moving.
