Google has expanded its Android Earthquake Alerts to more than 200 countries and regions. The company announced the change on October 15, 2026. The system worked in 98 places before. Panama and Guatemala are among the new additions.

Since 2021, the service has sent over one billion alerts. The goal is simple: give people a few seconds of warning before the shaking reaches them. Those seconds can help someone drop, cover, and hold on.

How the Alerts Work

The system uses the motion sensors already inside Android phones. When many phones feel the same kind of movement, Google checks the data to see if an earthquake is happening. If it is, the system sends alerts to people in the affected area.

Users can get three types of alerts, based on how strong the shaking is expected to be:

  • Be Aware: An earthquake has been detected nearby, and light shaking is expected.

  • Be Ready: Stronger shaking is expected, so users should get ready.

  • Take Action: A full-screen alert appears when moderate to heavy shaking is expected. It shows safety steps right away.

What is Changing for Users

Google is upgrading the 'Be Ready' alert. In the coming months, it will show a map of the area where shaking is expected. It will also show the estimated scale of the quake and what to do next.

A new button will let users see more details as updates come in. It pointed to Venezuela as an example. Earlier this year, millions of people outside the epicenter got alerts before the shaking began. Still, the warning time is short.

Alerts may also arrive at different times depending on where you are and how the quake unfolds. They do not replace official emergency warnings.

More people can now get earthquake alerts on their phones, and this move may help save lives. Even so, it is wise to know your local safety rules and keep an emergency plan ready. A phone alert is a useful extra, rather than a complete safety measure.
