Google has recently reported that phishing attacks and credential thefts are increasing rapidly, with an 84% rise during the previous year alone. It has also emphasized that such crimes have “only intensified in 2025.”

Cybercrimes are illegal activities that attackers commit to strategically extract users’ sensitive information like usernames, passwords, credit card details, and other personal data. There have also been instances of users being threatened with password-stealing emails. Many people have turned to Google’s online support forums to get help on how to recover a hacked account.

On 29 July, Andy Wen, senior director of product management at Google, made an announcement concerning the scope of these cyber attacks. Wen was alerted that hackers have intensified their credential theft methods and phishing attacks, driving 37% of successful intrusions. He also mentioned that there is an “exponential rise in cookie and authentication token theft,” which are used by attackers to conduct these thefts.

How to Avoid Getting Hacked in the First Place?

There are several safety measures one can adhere to in order to prevent cybercrimes.

  • Ensure the password is strong and unique

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).

  • Regularly monitor account activity or set alerts for suspicious activity.

  • Refrain from clicking unfamiliar links sent by unknown people.

By strictly following these steps, users can avoid online attacks to a great extent.

How to Recover a Hacked Account?

Despite following these safety measures, if the account gets attacked, users can follow these quick and easy steps to recover a hacked account:

  1. Open a web browser and type “g.co/recover” into the address bar. Use the device that was previously used to sign in to the account and make sure the location is the same as the most recent sign-in location.

  2. Answer the questions asked by Google. In case the current password is forgotten, enter a previous password.

  3. A security code will be sent to the recovery email, phone number, or authenticator app. It is important to note that Google never asks for passwords or OTPs through email, voice call, or messages.

  4. Reset the password.
