Goldman Sachs partner Chris Churchman has warned banks against outsourcing critical reasoning to AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. He made the remarks on Goldman Sachs’ Exchanges podcast on August 24, highlighting risks for Wall Street’s future talent.
Churchman leads Marquee, Goldman’s institutional platform, and co-chairs its Global Banking and Markets AI working group. He said heavy AI reliance could weaken problem-solving skills among junior bankers who learn through hands-on financial work.
“There’s a huge danger here that in the era of AI, we outsource our reasoning to these models,” Churchman said. He warned that such dependence could cause “cognitive atrophy” and reduce the ability to reason from first principles.
The concern reaches beyond productivity, as automation could reshape how junior employees build judgment and financial expertise. Traditional banking roles often expose new analysts to pricing, risk checks, research, and other demanding tasks.
Automating those activities may improve efficiency while reducing opportunities for employees to develop practical decision-making skills. Churchman also argued that humans should retain final authority during complex situations where AI recommendations remain uncertain.
His comments arrive as Wall Street firms expand AI use across trading, research, coding, compliance, and client services. Goldman Sachs itself uses AI tools and works with several major model providers for different business needs.
Churchman’s position focuses on controlled adoption rather than rejecting AI across financial operations. Goldman’s Marquee platform aims to build reliable AI products with strong data grounding and traceable outputs.
The bank says institutional AI systems must handle sensitive financial information while limiting errors and unsupported responses. The debate highlights a growing question for banks: how much decision-making should remain with human financial experts?
For Wall Street, the answer could shape future hiring, training, risk controls, and competitive strategies.
