Katherine Rundell’s fantasy book Impossible Creatures is getting a Disney movie. In 2025, Disney announced that it purchased the rights to produce live-action films based on Impossible Creatures, a children's fantasy-adventure book. The original story is set in a location that’s inspired by The Odyssey. Recently, after the third book in the series was released, the writer announced that she would work on the next entry two years later and, in the meantime, would be working on the script.
Regarding the screenplay writing experience, the author mentioned, “It has been such a pleasure, one of the most thrilling creative experiences in my life, turning a novel into a film with all the potential that has. I love the way novels give you access to someone's inner monologue.”
Additionally, Rundell stated that she will try to make the story as emotionally true, powerful, and funny as possible. She expressed that Disney has 100 years of experience in the domain and is trusting them to be able to bring them to life.

The script is an important part of that change. A book can spend many pages building its world, while a movie has to tell the same story in a shorter time. Some parts may need to be changed or cut for the big screen. Rundell seems ready for those changes as long as the heart of the story stays intact.
When it comes to the original book, new creatures were introduced in every entry, and she has been considering options since 2016, some of them are bizarre. The story may include unicorns, giants, dragons, and karkadanns. Each one adds something different to the world and gives Disney plenty to work with on screen.
These creatures could also make the movie a visual treat. Turning a much-loved book into a movie is never easy. Fans will want to see the world they imagined on the page while new viewers will expect a strong film. Rundell’s decision to trust the team could give Disney room to shape the story for a wider audience. If the adaptation gets that balance right, Impossible Creatures could become a fresh fantasy adventure on the big screen.
