Apple is reportedly planning a big change for its MacBook lineup. After the release of the iPhone 18 series models, the Cupertino-based tech giant is rumored to be working on the redesign of MacBook Pro. Bloomberg’s Mark Gruman mentioned that the company is currently planning a thinner and lighter design for its MacBook Pro, along with an OLED screen and touchscreen support. If it happens, this would be a major change for Apple’s laptop line. Apple is also rumored to be working on macOS changes that would make touch input easier.
The weight reduction is reportedly noticeable. Currently, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Max chip weighs around 2.15 kg; meanwhile, the 15-inch MacBook Air weighs about 1.5kg. Though the exact weight reduction isn’t mentioned, it is expected to be substantial. Reports also suggest that Apple could launch it as soon as next month. It may continue to use the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple is reportedly testing macOS 27.2 for the redesigned version of the Pro models.
A thinner laptop sounds simple, but it is not. There are many parts packed inside a MacBook Pro. These include the battery, cooling system, speakers, and other hardware. Apple needs to make room for all of them while cutting the size and weight. It also needs to make sure the laptop does not get too hot. This could be why the company is looking at a new layout for the internal parts.

A touchscreen would change how people use the MacBook Pro. Apple is reportedly preparing macOS for touch input. The move could bring some Mac features closer to the way people use an iPad.
The OLED screen could also improve the display experience. If these changes arrive together, the next MacBook Pro could feel very different from the current models. The success of the redesign could depend as much on what happens inside the laptop as what users see outside.
