Apple is reportedly considering replacing Siri AI with advanced large language models (LLMs) from Anthropic or OpenAI. This move could mark a major shift from Apple’s long-standing approach of building core technologies in-house.

The company has tested Claude and ChatGPT internally to explore improvements to Siri’s capabilities. Early results show Claude performed better than Apple’s own models, especially in handling complex queries and coding tasks. These findings are pushing the tech giant to consider external partnerships.

Apple in Licensing Talks with Anthropic and OpenAI

The company is currently negotiating with Anthropic and OpenAI to license customized versions of their LLMs. These models would be hosted on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring secure processing of user data.

Anthropic is seeking a multibillion-dollar licensing deal that would increase in cost over time. In response, the Tim Cook-led company is exploring a deal with OpenAI. Both companies are working to tailor their models to meet Apple’s privacy standards and performance requirements.

Apple Rethinks Its AI Strategy

Apple has historically relied on its foundation models for AI tools like Siri. However, the company has fallen behind competitors such as Google Assistant and Galaxy AI.

The tech giant aims to deliver a smarter Siri by integrating Claude or ChatGPT. This new version could improve conversation quality, handle complex tasks, and boost overall performance. Thus, helping Apple regain its competitive edge.

Siri Upgrade Could Arrive in 2025

Apple continues to work on its own LLM, expected to launch in 2026. However, it may release an upgraded Siri powered by external AI models as early as the end of 2025. Although a final decision has not been made. The company is still testing. It remains to be seen whether the deal goes through, and if so, what the price and new features will be.
