Anthropic struck a multi-billion-dollar pact with Elon Musk’s xAI to acquire computing infrastructure through 2029. According to various reports, Anthropic will pay a monthly fee of nearly $1.25 billion, which translates to roughly $40 billion in contract value over the coming years.

Under this deal, Anthropic will gain access to xAI’s extensive data center infrastructure and GPU cluster to develop high-quality AI models like Claude.

It is one of those rare instances where we see that access to computational resources is becoming as crucial in the world of AI as the development of AI models itself.

Why Anthropic Needs xAI’s Infrastructure

Anthropic has rapidly expanded its Claude chatbot and enterprise AI services in recent months. The company now faces rising demand from businesses using AI coding tools, automation systems, and large language models.

Training frontier AI systems requires massive clusters of NVIDIA GPUs, along with high electricity supply and cooling infrastructure. Building such facilities independently can cost tens of billions of dollars and take years.

The deal reportedly gives Anthropic access to more than 220,000 GPUs and hundreds of megawatts of computing power from xAI’s Colossus supercomputer facility in Memphis, Tennessee.

Industry analysts say the agreement could help Anthropic scale its services more quickly while avoiding delays caused by global chip shortages and power constraints.

xAI Turns Spare Capacity into Revenue

For xAI, the deal creates a steady revenue stream from infrastructure that may not have been fully utilized. Reports indicate the company shifted a large share of its internal AI workloads to newer systems, leaving spare capacity at older facilities. Leasing that capacity to Anthropic allows xAI to monetize expensive AI infrastructure while continuing its own expansion.

The agreement also reflects a broader trend across the AI industry. Companies are increasingly investing in giant GPU clusters and renting computing power much like cloud service providers.

The partnership stands out because Musk has publicly criticized Anthropic. Despite competitive tensions, the growing demand for AI infrastructure is now pushing rivals to collaborate.
