Air India has announced Campbell Wilson’s resignation. The airline confirmed that a veteran aviation executive has resigned as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India. The exit comes at a crucial time just as the airline began to stabilize after years of service. Wilson had already given an indication in 2024 but the news still raises questions about the company’s future.
Air India has made it clear that this isn’t an unexpected resignation. Wilson had already shared his intention to step down in 2026 with Chairman N. Chandrasekaran. Since then, the focus has been on preparing the airline for a smooth handover. A search committee is now looking for an alternative.
Wilson’s four-year tenure has largely been about fixing the basics. After privatisation, Air India had to rebuild almost everything from systems and leadership to customer experience. The airline merged multiple entities, upgraded aircraft, and tried to shed its old image. “It has seen the complete modernisation of systems… as well as 100 additional aircraft added to the fleet,” Wilson said.
However, the turnaround didn’t happen in the right conditions. Multiple issues such as supply chain delays after COVID, slow aircraft deliveries, and global uncertainties made the job harder. Even Chairman Chandrasekaran pointed out these “geopolitical and other headwinds,” while crediting the team for holding things together.
The spotlight has now shifted to what happens after Wilson’s exit. The difficult part of cleaning up and rebuilding has largely been done. The next phase is about continuing better service, stronger profits, and staying competitive. The company is looking for a leader who can achieve these milestones.
Wilson’s exit feels like the end of a repair phase. From now on, the following work will decide the airline’s future, whether Air India can truly compete at a global level or will it be a work in progress.
