1Password Introduces New Security Tools for AI Agents

1Password has introduced a security feature that allows supported AI agents to use approved website logins without directly exposing users' passwords. The service aims to make AI-powered tasks safer by giving users control over which credentials their assistants can access.

Password manager 1Password has expanded its security tools to work with more AI agents, allowing them to sign in to websites and complete tasks without exposing users' actual passwords. The new service, called 1Password for Agents, is designed for people who want AI assistants to handle online tasks without giving them unrestricted access to their personal accounts.

The feature supports integrations with several AI tools, including Meta's Muse and SpaceX's Grok Bot. Support for OpenAI's ChatGPT Work and dots, as well as Anthropic's Claude Duet, is also planned. The integrations are rolling out at different times, depending on the partner.

How 1Password Protects Your Credentials

The idea is straightforward: an AI agent can request access to a saved login when it needs to complete a task, but the user decides whether to approve that request. Once permission is granted, 1Password fills in the required credentials directly on the relevant website. The AI agent can use the login to complete the task without seeing the password.

For example, a user could ask an AI assistant to organize a party, check registrations on an event website, or find products within a budget. If the task requires signing in to a service, the agent can request the relevant login through 1Password instead of asking the user to share their password in a chat.

Users Remain in Control of Access

The system requires users to approve credential requests, helping prevent an AI agent from freely accessing every login stored in their password vault. Access is limited to the credentials approved for a particular task rather than granting the agent permanent access to the entire vault. Integrations are also opt-in, so users choose which supported AI tools to connect.

This approach addresses a growing security concern surrounding AI agents. Giving an assistant a password directly could expose sensitive information to the AI model or the systems handling its requests. Keeping credentials outside the model reduces that risk.

Which AI Agents Can Use 1Password?

The new integrations include Meta Muse and Grok Bot, with support for ChatGPT Work, dots, and Claude Duet planned. Additional integrations with services such as Perplexity, Browserbase, and other agent platforms are also in development.

1Password for Agents is available at no additional cost to eligible Individual and Family subscribers using 1Password.com. Availability varies by partner and platform, and accounts hosted on 1Password's European and Canadian domains are not currently supported.

As AI assistants take on more tasks that require access to personal accounts, tools like this could offer a practical middle ground: letting AI get work done without handing over the keys to a user's digital life.
