A new AI startup has grabbed global attention with a bold claim. Founded just a few months ago, this British AI lab has secured $1.1 billion in funding. The founder, David Silver, has attracted interest by stating that he aims to create an AI that can train itself without relying on human data.
The claim is groundbreaking, and the funding indicates that investors believe in this vision. Silver’s ‘Superlearner’ is simple to describe, but the aim is tough to achieve. Building an AI that can explore the world, test ideas, and improve on its own is something that even the AI giants haven’t claimed yet. Ineffable Intelligence has made one of the boldest statements of recent times. As a former DeepMind researcher, Silver has prior experience working with AI systems. However, the company’s website has declared that if it reaches its goal, “This will represent a scientific breakthrough of comparable magnitude to Darwin, whose law explained all Life, our law will explain and build all Intelligence.”
This confidence is rooted in Silver’s past success. At DeepMind, he was part of the team behind AlphaZero, a program that learned to play chess and Go through self-play. The system wasn’t trained on human data; it simply played hundreds of games against itself and improved with each round.
The result was historic. AlphaZero defeated the strongest computer programs in both games. This instance proved that machines could learn complex skills without human guidance.
Ineffable Intelligence now plans to apply the same reinforcement learning method to a much bigger challenge. Instead of mastering a single game, the system will attempt to discover knowledge across many fields. The idea is that experience alone can build intelligence.
The rise of Ineffable Intelligence highlights a larger trend. The United Kingdom is becoming a major hub for AI. Multiple advanced AI groups have strong ties with the country, including Recursive Superintelligence and AMI Labs.
London’s momentum did not appear overnight. A key moment came in 2014, when Google acquired DeepMind. The research center remained in London and continued to attract talent from around the world.
Now, new projects are strengthening the city’s reputation. Reports suggest that Jeff Bezos is planning to expand his own AI initiative, known as Project Prometheus, near Google’s AI hub. This cluster of research labs is turning London into one of the most active AI centers.

For now, the focus remains on the mission to build an AI that learns autonomously. If the project succeeds, it will show that intelligence can emerge from experience and possibly change the way humans perceive knowledge.
