Journey as an Influential Leader

Natasha Tamaskar is the Head of Global Marketing and Sales Enablement at Radisys. She started her career working on a Ph.D. in Computational Physics from the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State University. While her academic work was rewarding, Natasha wanted to make a difference in the near-term by applying her skillset to the commercial sector.

Natasha's first commercial sector job was with a defense consulting company, which ultimately led her to the telecom sector. Her career shift correlated with the emergence of mobile technology, the move towards 5G and the transformation of next-gen networks.

In her current position, Natasha is focused on driving the industry and customer mind share globally around Radisys' leadership role in delivering open telecom solutions to improve the company's bottom line while helping the telecom industry transform. The company is listening to what its customers want and delivering those solutions to the market, enabling disruptive, forward-thinking technologies and end-to-end solutions.

One of the most important lessons Natasha has learned early on was about the value of "keeping it simple." While pursuing her Ph.D., she was working on extremely complex subjects and the work she was doing was truly impressive. Then one day one of her professors challenged her, "Can you explain this to your grandmother?"

Natasha views that, "By simplifying the complex for your audience, you are targeting their interests in ways they can understand. Making ideas and products simple, makes them fundamental as well." She has applied simplicity in all facets of her career, from building products to developing messaging to driving strategy.

Challenging the Status-Quo

Natasha mentions that while the telecom industry is still predominantly male-dominated, she believes that as woman in technology one has a real opportunity to influence change and bring new perspectives to the table. Natasha was lucky to have mentors in her life who encouraged her to pursue a technology degree, who challenged her critical thinking skills, and who inspired her to work hard.

Moving forward, Natasha thinks that it is imperative that the next generation of young women are encouraged to pursue technology careers and that they are supported with the tools and resources to succeed.

Paving Way for Transformational Leadership

Curiosity, a passion for lifelong learning, the ability to evaluate and take risks, and surrounding oneself with the right team that brings additional skills, knowledge, and perspectives to the table are the characteristics of a transformational leader. This is where innovation happens, and where the next big ideas are born, says Natasha on the aspect of Transformational Leadership.

She continues, "At Radisys, we transformed our company and solution portfolio from a hardware-based company to Open Radisys – focused on enabling open, disaggregated and software-driven networks that power next-generation telecom networks. We also expanded our portfolio to include analytics, artificial intelligence, and advanced speech recognition-based solutions to meet the evolving technology needs of "connected everything." she concludes.

Leveraging Innovation for Continuous Growth

Natasha firmly believes that the service providers are seeking to transform their networks to open telecom networks and move towards becoming digital engagement providers. Radisys has been in lock-step by expanding its portfolio of open and disaggregated products and services with new solutions that leverage artificial intelligence and media analytics to enable their journey. Natasha and her team are

making Radisys synonymous with open telecom and technologies by offering end-to-end solutions from digital endpoints to disaggregated and open access and core solutions, to immersive digital applications and engagement platforms.

Addressing the Disruptive Technology Goals for the Future

Speaking on disruptive technologies, Natasha says enterprises are increasingly utilizing cloud-based applications, interactive chat-based channels, and self-service virtual assistants, providing improved economics with increased flexibility. One of the key technologies that are shaping the lives and works today is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI along with machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing can be used for a variety of activities from monitoring surveillance cameras to customer interactions to autonomous vehicles. Natasha views that "We use AI in our daily lives (in the guise of Alexa, Waze, Grammarly, Chatbots, etc.) without even realizing."

While AI can improve efficiency and reduce costs, there is still a fundamental need for the "human touch," especially regarding interactions between businesses and their customers. The role of modern technology leaders is to bridge this gap and create a single pane of glass experience across a technology mosaic without making it complicated for the user. Radisys has addressed this with the Radisys Engage Video Assistant (EVA) –

he World's first AI-based video call bot for customer engagement. The EVA bot enables automated 1:1 video interaction with subject matter experts, call center agent, and brand ambassadors just like live video call. The application automates sales, marketing, and customer support interactions, responding to verbal requests with video responses by humans, not computer-generated avatars.

The company has also developed media analytics solutions that enable personalized contextual communications and biometrics-based solutions. Natasha envisions that voice-enabled interfaces are one of the fastest-growing interface tools for applications like Siri and Alexa. The company is bringing advanced speech recognition and AI-based tools to live voice and video communications to support new IoT use cases. For example, a smoke detector that detects smoke could trigger a call to the fire department saving time and potentially lives.

She adds that leaders in technology should see beyond today's applications and envision how the technology can evolve to support applications of the future that one has not even dreamed of yet. Everyone is always looking for the next killer app, where technologies like AI and 5G will be the enablers.

In Natasha's words, "As the 4th Industrial Revolution that is connecting everything

people and devices – is embraced, we will need to leverage AI and 5G." Radisys continues to deliver solutions and services that will meet its connectivity and communications requirements now and in the future.

Guidance to the Emerging Women Leaders

Mentoring emerging women leaders of tomorrow, Natasha shares that over her career she has identified three qualities that define successful leaders-

First, they need to understand their industry, challenges, and solutions completely. Having an in-depth understanding of an issue or technology allows one to become a better problem solver and find unique, creative solutions without losing sight of where the issue fits with the bigger context. So, emerging leaders must always approach a subject by learning as much about it as they can.

Secondly, though, successful leaders also realize that no one person can possibly know everything. They take advantage of the fact that everyone is part of a large ecosystem. Natasha advises budding women leaders to learn how to collaborate and gather knowledge from others around them, both from their own industry as well as others.

Finally, emerging women leaders must realize that they cannot do it all by themselves. As the saying goes, "No one person is an island." In their professional and personal life, they must surround themselves with a trusted team of technical and creative people and incorporate their diverse ideas and perspectives to elevate their own understanding of different topics.
