No Language Left Behind: Meta's new AI model is capable of translating across 200 different languages

Social media conglomerate Meta has taken another step towards creating a universal language translator. It has created a single AI model capable of translating across 200 different languages, including many not supported by current commercial tools including many obscure ones with low digital resources. The company is open-sourcing the project in the hopes that others will build on its work. The artificial intelligence model is part of an ambitious research & development project by Meta to create a so-called "universal speech translator.

Meta's new 'No Language left Behind':

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said to help people connect better today and be part of the metaverse of tomorrow Meta's artificial intelligence researchers created the 'No Language Left Behind' (NLLB) project, which can now reportedly translate 200 different languages. and the AI modeling techniques we used from NLLB are helping us make high-quality translations on Facebook and Instagram for languages spoken by billions of people around the world.

The company is working on not one but two machine translation projects that will make it easier for people to communicate with others even if they speak a rare or low-resource language. To best evaluate and improve NLLB-200, Meta built FLORES-200, a dataset that enables researchers to assess this AI model's performance in 40,000 different language directions. The company has also struggled to monitor misinformation and hate speech in lesser-resourced languages.

Meta said that less than 25 African languages are currently supported by available translation tools. The new research could mitigate these risks and improve user experiences. Metaverse can build technologies that work well in a wider range of languages and will help to democratize access to immersive experiences in virtual worlds.  It also brings the fantasy of a universal translator closer to reality.
